Threading barrel with hand tools

Here you go...they have all the tools for various threading applications.....mainly intended for surplus rifles......just click on the "Tools" section....I wouldn't attempt it on a modern firearm...

Thanks. I appreciate the cautionary note. What I was wondering is, what type of die is required?
fyi- dies are sized by diameter and threads per inch. like say 3/8-16 would be 3/8 dia and 16 tpi. There are other differences to but this is the main one.

Please stop thinking of it .....

A New Barrel will cost more in the long run.

If you still want to try it after all the advice not too, practice first on an old barrel and see if it turns out the way you hoped.

You need the barrel turned to the diameter for the thread. Just have it done right. Being cheep will cost you more a lot of the time. I've seen a few die threading jobs. ive seen brakes shot off

Here's what you need to do: got to home depot, plumbing section, and get the attendant to use the Rigid pipe threader on your barrel and then put on a 1/2" close nipple. Don't take the actioon out of the stock as you may not be able to get it back together

As has been alluded to the barrel must be turned to major thread diameter to the axis of the bore and even then it is near impossible to start a die straight without mechanical means. If you had a lathe you could indicate and thread to nearly done then use a class 3 die to finish up. But why?

In my humble opinion it will be a disappointing endeavor but it should prove to be quite entertaining.

I consider myself an above average tinkerer, shade tree mechanic, hand tool machinist, whatever you want to call it. I will tell you that if I had the die, and the barrel was not that important to me, I would give it a try. Realize, however, that the chance of failure is greater than success, so have a back up plan in place.
Realistically, this is not a project I would consider doing myself. I suggest you do some research on the previously mentioned clamp on brake and also get a price from a gunsmith to do the job. Good luck!

I think I have a suspicion of what's going on, and why the OP wants to keep this "private".;)

My guess? "Oh crap, I just dropped the half nut on the wrong line". Threading job gone bad.:( Hmm, how to fix.

Out of all the muzzle brakes I have and had, the Kahntrol Solutions Clamp-on brake did the best job at reducing felt recoil.
At the same time it gave the biggest concussion blast !
Not kidding, the 300winmag I put it on felt like a 223rem.

Only one person cautioned him about turning the barrel first before installing a brake. Brakes are not threaded to fit the OD of the barrel. He needs to keep in mind that it will have to be turned to the major pitch diameter before threading.

Personally i follow.the advice i don't want anything messing.up my muzzle

Just my opinion

I hate a brake. the concussion from the muzzle.blast is worse.than the.excessive.noise.

They serve no purpose for any rifle below the recoil of a 300 win mag and.even then i would not want one on a hunting rifle i shot less than 10 times a year. I don't want to have.to wear ear plugs and muffs when i am hunting.

Gun product manufacturers have done a great job marketing them though. All.the.rage with the tactical crowd. Just got to have a brake on that .223. And an 18" barrel on a 308 just isn't complete without a brake that looks.like the muzzle of an M1 tank.

Wish suppressors had the same following.
