Chambering a Carbon Wrapped Barrel

Just a quick question for those with experience. I am getting ready to chamber my first Proof barrel, and was wandering if anyone had any advice they could spare. My concern is damage to the carbon surface during the dialing-in process with the jacking bolts on the spiders at either end of my headstock. I am using 1/4" brass tips on my current bolts. Do I need to make buttons of some type or will these bolts still work ok as long as I don't get too aggressive with the tightness.

Thanks in advance,

Tony.

You can not apply any pressure with jacking bolts (or pads) or chuck jaws on the carbon fiber wrap. All 'clamping' has to be on the steel.

the chambering guys at proof are using steel jaws clamped down hard on the tang. at crown, it's three hardened steel ~3" length by ~1/4" width flat jaws clamped directly on the carbon fiber and with a cheater bar on the t-handle. i've never seen any crush damage, only damage from the barrel slipping from not being tightened enough during a lathe "oops."

I use thick hobby sheet aluminum ( .060" thick) cut and wrapped around the barrel any place I need to capture the barrel in my 4 jaw chuck and the spider screws on the outside of the headstock.. I have chambered several of them with no damage to the carbon fiber wrap..

And if it does get scratched just hit it with sand paper turning in the lathe. Cleans right up
