Prairie Dog Outfitter Suggestions

A buddy and I are thinking about making a trip out west to do a few days of Prairie Dog hunting. We'd like to go the outfitter route and are considering eastern to central South Dakota. Ideally, it would be great if we could find an outfit that would allow us to camp out on a property as opposed to lodging or motels but that's not a hard requirement. Just would be more fun.

Also would consider central Montana. I'm from there but don't have a any good leads on prairie dogs plus air fair is generally higher. With South Dakota, we're thinking we can save money by flying into Minneapolis and driving into SD.

Anybody have recommendations on an outfitter or ranch that offers pay to play prairie dog hunting?

Wow, a member asks a simple, reasonable question and you drop the F bomb over a prairie rat? Give the guy a break and don't be a dickhead. Maybe he has limited time or limited experience and wants to make the most of his trip? I have spent thousands in fuel and wear and tear looking for dogtowns and I am to the point now where I'd rather rip a hundred in half and tell a local he gets the other half when I feel I shot enough.

Call an Indian Res....When I shot State regs and season did not apply. Some Res. are reasonable some are expensive. The Indians are friendly but come bearing gifts.

Found my outfitter out of the late Varmint hunter magazine . I pay $200 a day which includes Room a breakfast and bag lunch . I've never shot so much in my life.

Sorry, like it or not we now live in a globalized world with a global market and hunting is largely a commodity. You can resist or embrace it. Complain all you want but you'll probably be doing it from the couch, in an echo chamber with like minded guys also behind the times while guys like me are out there breaking out their check book's and having fun.

It matters not to me.

That's what I've been doing and I've contacted a few but they never get back to me. Haven't tried Rockin 7 Ranch but might give that a shot.

I think I'll give some of the other recommendations above a try as well.

Yes, they everyone is pretty busy during the prime season. Some limit the amount of shooters and are full up. It is best to contact everyone during the off season. Try Buffalo Butte Ranch

Entitlement? What am I saying I'm entitled to? And market? People created the "market ". I've never one time payed to shoot prairie dogs!! But I have talked to ranchers that have there place leased out to outfitters, to shoot animals that they used to pay to have poisoned. That is there right to make money however they see fit. The business was created by out of staters that will never understand why we prefer the good old days when you knocked on the door, had a cup of coffee, and took your family out to shoot for free. Embrace it?? I have plenty of access to private land at least but I hate the direction it's heading. I think 49% of our state is public land, so I don't know why someone would pay to shoot on "their" land. Trust me privately owned ranches usually have a huge amount of government ground. Look at your gps when you are hunting on "private". Hell I can show you where to go. I mean if you need someone to wait on your every need, no, but if you can read a map or gps, I bet you can shoot til you're sick of it. Then you wouldn't be contributing to this market. There. Didn't even use scary language.

I know time are changing but that doesn't mean I can't say it sucks. You are just used to it where you live. East of the Missouri River there is a different world. Plenty of good people. Different culture. Suspect it just gets more different the farther you go.

Flatwillow Creek Outfitters, in Winnett, MT. Great accommodations, great food, great guides. Been shooting PD's since 1995, and they are one of the two top outfitters we have used. I know some don't like to pay ( we didn't have to pay back in the '90's ), but I have limited time to vacation - I want to shoot, not drive around looking / asking for permission. FWCO will set you up to shoot as far as you want to go ( we were shooting PD's at slightly over 1 mile last year ). Stay away from the Indian reservations ( or only as a last resort ).

Buy once, cry once. Best money I've spent.

Why stay away from Indian reservations ? I'll be hunting on a ranch that has something to do with the Crow agency . This will be my 3rd year and I never shot so much in one day. Bang bang bang all day long ,every where.

I remember back home a guy used to be able to knock on a ranchers door and ask to hunt deer coyotes or prairie dogs and it was most generally no problem if you shut gates behind ya and didn't shoot no cows. So yes all the people with lots of money have screwed up a lot of hunting. I will never pay to shoot a damn prairie dog and I can still kill em all day long. If everybody would quit payin for this kind of stuff for a couple years people would be Begging you guys to come kill em. For free.

First time was deep creek shot 1500 rds in 3 days. Last year went to prairie dog lodge and shot 1000rds in 2 days

How do you know what he makes? See, you don't get it. So I'm not going to waste any more time explaining it. People suck, that's why we live here. Now I know how the Indians felt. Must be karma for that.

And lock your car. I hunt on the res every year, but sometimes there are some issues. No worse than parking downtown in any big city I suppose.
