I've been trying to run over one of them like that for 35 Years and all I get is piss heads.
You are partially right. I judge it like I judge a buck at long range. I use size of trees or the head, like tip of ear to ear. If you look at the skull you can clearly see it has great spread. If you look at his hands where they go around the rack, It is great mass. That is not at the thickest part either. MattI'm not impressed. The old trick, held at arm's length and close to the camera lens, making it appear twice as big against the scale reference, the human in the background. When it's scored by B&C or State of NM, get back to me. I'm not saying it's not a nice buck, just not the monster it appears.

Also, his hands are well outside his shoulders. Granted, there is some scale distortion in the photo, but that is one 'Holy Sh*t!' rack! You are partially right. The more I look at it, the more I like it. NM has a reputation for heavy antlers (deer and elk) and also non-typical racks. I sure would like to know how it scores out, though, all the other visual clues are just, well, clues. Also, his hands are well outside his shoulders. I agree it would be nice to see a score. If you look his left arm is not extended as much. Probably the rack has some weight to it. Seeing the mass and spread it would have to score good. Good chance Cabelas will end up with it or a reproduction for their deer room. They get all the big ones when they find out. Some real impressive whitetails and mule deer there. I remember one at 44 inches wide. MattThe more I look at it, the more I like it. NM has a reputation for heavy antlers (deer and elk) and also non-typical racks. I believe they would do copies and put it in Cabelas as well. They got replicas of most the famous bucks. Hanson, Hole in horn, Missouri Monarch and can't remember all of them. The deer room at Cabelas in Hamburg PA is impressive. Gotta be over 100 heads in there. MattWith Bass Pro owning Cabela's the rack would likely end up in their Springfield, MO. facility. Well that's just a guess![]()
That might be a new record in NM. The current record is 213 4/8 taken in 2004?UPDATE: Received a reply from NMGF. The animal was killed in Los Alamos, NM. Scored 230 SCI and will be forsale this coming weekend at the Governors Auction.
I am hunting unit 45 in the Pecos with muzzleloader this year!Years ago I used to hunt the Chama area for elk. Asking around about mule deer I was told the area north of Pecos had huge mule deer. Passing through there a year later we inquired about renting horses to take in & the wrangler told us he hoped we could tell the difference between a mule deer & an elk, because supposedly the mule deer were so big. Now I see what he was talking about!!!!
