Giant NM Mule Deer

I'm not impressed. The old trick, held at arm's length and close to the camera lens, making it appear twice as big against the scale reference, the human in the background. When it's scored by B&C or State of NM, get back to me. I'm not saying it's not a nice buck, just not the monster it appears.

You are partially right. I judge it like I judge a buck at long range. I use size of trees or the head, like tip of ear to ear. If you look at the skull you can clearly see it has great spread. If you look at his hands where they go around the rack, It is great mass. That is not at the thickest part either. Matt

Also, his hands are well outside his shoulders. Granted, there is some scale distortion in the photo, but that is one 'Holy Sh*t!' rack!

The more I look at it, the more I like it. NM has a reputation for heavy antlers (deer and elk) and also non-typical racks. I sure would like to know how it scores out, though, all the other visual clues are just, well, clues.

I agree it would be nice to see a score. If you look his left arm is not extended as much. Probably the rack has some weight to it. Seeing the mass and spread it would have to score good. Good chance Cabelas will end up with it or a reproduction for their deer room. They get all the big ones when they find out. Some real impressive whitetails and mule deer there. I remember one at 44 inches wide. Matt

With Bass Pro owning Cabela's the rack would likely end up in their Springfield, MO. facility. Well that's just a guess :D

I believe they would do copies and put it in Cabelas as well. They got replicas of most the famous bucks. Hanson, Hole in horn, Missouri Monarch and can't remember all of them. The deer room at Cabelas in Hamburg PA is impressive. Gotta be over 100 heads in there. Matt

I haven't been to the Springfield MO Bass Pro in several years but they built a museum there to house mounts, etc. in addition to what they have in the store.

The deer looks huge in the photo but I don't think there's too much trickery going on. If you use his fingers for a reference you can get an idea of what the buck is. My opinion is that it's not as big as the picture indicates but it is still a massive buck. Probably past his prime by a couple of years. I love these old bucks with great mass. I've guided much of New Mexico and I've seen similar bucks come from Units close to the Jicarilla, Pie town and the Gila. I think New Mexico gets way over hunted, multiple hunts for deer and elk all over the state. No matter how hard they get hunted some make it to 7-10 years old, it always impresses me. It would be interesting to know if there are any trail cam pics of this buck and what his history is. We use to hunt the Navajo when it was 75.00 for a mule deer tag, back in the late eighties. The racks laying out on fences and on top of sheds were unbelievable back then, many have been bought now but I always wonder how many big buck racks got discarded and thrown away.

UPDATE: Received a reply from NMGF. The animal was killed in Los Alamos, NM. Scored 220 SCI and will be forsale this coming weekend at the Governors Auction.

That might be a new record in NM. The current record is 213 4/8 taken in 2004?

Los Alamos, score 220 4/8, 4 years old, will be up for auction and the NM Governor's Auction Feb 18th

Well, that makes a little more sense. I bet that ole buck was vacationing from the Valles Caldera Natl'. Monument Park. Guess he found out that cars outside the park don't stop to look!! I fly fished the Natl. Park. what a beautiful place. BIG elk and deer are almost tame.

Years ago I used to hunt the Chama area for elk. Asking around about mule deer I was told the area north of Pecos had huge mule deer. Passing through there a year later we inquired about renting horses to take in & the wrangler told us he hoped we could tell the difference between a mule deer & an elk, because supposedly the mule deer were so big. Now I see what he was talking about!!!!
I am hunting unit 45 in the Pecos with muzzleloader this year!

Must have been a lady driver. Otherwise, the story would have been a lot different. LUCKY HUNTER KILLS MONSTER MULE DEER , WON'T SHARE SECRET SPOT.

Nice buck but wished you would have kept the pic to yourself,....honestly, all we need is more out of staters here hunting in my back yard?
