Small weighing platform for FX-120i, FX-200i, FX300i

These scales have a very large weighing platform susceptible any air flow. Here is how to make a small one for about $40 including shipping. You can order the stainless pan and pan support from A&D through OldWillKnottScales. To save your original, order another pan support. Then order a small stainless pan for the A&D HT-120 which is 2.75" diameter instead of the stock 5.1" diameter. The pan support is chromed plastic and easy to cut. I used a Dremmel with a cut-off disk and a drum sander. Sand the outside to just fit in the pan. With just the 2 pieces, it's too light for the scale to work. I added lead weights (#00-buckshot pellets) and flattened them a little to fit and glued them in with clear epoxy glue. With the added weight, it works fine.

The original parts weighed 97.053 grams. The new one with the weight added is 81.167 grams, but only 24.596 grams without the weights. The scale weighs everything the same. Besides the new support (exact same part number) was 6.444 grams heavier. I haven't got to work with it yet to see how it behaves.

Worked with it last night. The scale is noticeable more stable with the breeze shield either partially opened or completely off. Unless I made fast movements. I could reach my hand over and add or remove a powder pan without the air movement changing the reading. Plus anything you weigh will be near the center although I have weighed almost to the edge of the large pan without any problems. Right now the new platform/pan is about 16 grams lighter. Before doing this mod, I took the stainless pan off the original large diameter platform which reduced the weight by 58.6 grams and it still worked fine.

Besides the new support (exact same part number) was 6.444 grams heavier. It works much better. I've loaded with it with a window air conditioner less than 2 feet away with no problems with the panel removed facing the a/c. I can also weigh without the breeze cover on but have to move a little slower directly over the scale. Another advantage is that no matter where you place the powder pan, it's not very far off center. The only disadvantage is that I have to reach inside farther to move the pan or whatever is being weighed. And I still have the original pan and cover so nothing is altered in case the scale goes back under warranty.
