585HE and Powder Questions

WE got a hydraulic forming die setup we made,

Saves a lot of time and powder, and gets shoulder

to fairly good chamber fit. Ed

Our testing and necking down operation steps

and hydraulic case forming is showing that the

length from top of belt to the shoulder, from belt to neck

has to be changed on case drawing and and reamer drawing.

From top of belt to shoulder is now 2.570"..

From top of belt to neck is 2,750" ..

The neck is now .290" and neck section on reamer is .300"

We are letting are letting reamer folks know. Ed

About hydraulic forming die setup we made, for 375 HE,

Saves a lot of time and powder, and gets them to chamber size.

The cases we and others necked had kind of what is called

small love handles or donut, at the shoulder. If we tried holding it

all in at the shoulder case too thick there when looked at

by sectioning case . Even when we sectioned them to check

after firing, But doing them in the hydraulic die, which is adjustable,

with debth changes in the die, we was able to get shoulder looking right, by stretching

out the donut, and shoulder forward, gained .020" length to shoulder, so

made our test gun chamber longer, leaving belt step in same place,

from base to shoulder to match, after firing, were better at the shoulder when sectioned,

IE looked better on the inside of case sides to shoulder corner,

and that is how we got the revision for reamer figured out best.

Then got all reamer prints at Manson, PTG, JGS, to match.

Case forming easier, proportions better, little more volume.

Our hydro die, we made adjustable base, made things lot easier.

In essence an adjustable chamber.. Ed

Neck die inserts set in .020" steps to make our 375 HEs shown behind

from our 585HE cases. also made a hydraulic form die, 375 HE test gun,

starting with lighter bullets, for example got 340 gr to 3700,

Will test up to 400gr We will find top speeds and powders needed

to get that, and have info where to get powders. Reamer prints are

at reamer guys, all prints and info is public domain... Ed

Got guys getting excited including family,on 416, so making up 416 cases for

it already and doing final 416 HE, reamer print, have an action ready ,

already have a 416 test barrel here to check it in, when they put it in the

action in few days, and will be load and speed testing when cold spell breaks.

Please check this out, a new real long range shoot planned for

this summer in South Texas. Ed

We using same process to get 416 dimensions as on 375.

With a 416 hydro die, to be done soon and test gun to

be done soon, to double check and have the

416 cases with proper shoulder corner thickness.

And then one set of the accurate case and chamber measurements

which is then used to get reamer specs..ED

A picture of our 375 HE hydro die.

We use it on lathe bed, we give rod a dozen hits.

Base is adjustable, which great aid in getting best case results. Ed..

Picture of the 416 HE target case, these run through

the hydro-die, test gun done, testing soon, to confirm specs.Ed

Here is pic of 416 HSM second from left we are experimenting
with, going see if we can make the ultimate 416 ELR case.
Can be 3.60" to 4.00" long, ac long one pictured.
Holds 280 gr ball powder under bullet. The
3.6" case can hold about 250gr under bullet.. In picture,
1st case is 416 HE, 2nd 416 HSM, 3rd 375 He, 4th 378 WEA.

416 HSM will get 400gr to 4000 without needing BMG action,
470 gr 3700, it may be the ultimate target, singleshot 416..
Case will work in fat bolt actions, with heavy enough barrel
to have good, milder, barrel harmonics and be under 50 lbs. Ed

Manson has 416 HE and 408 HE prints, as well as 375 HE
He can also make you a resize die reamer from that info.
We got 700 cases in 416 and one more pass if 408s wanted, ,
Going to do more cases for these 2 sizes, Ed
PM or email. ph 989-644-5228.. Here are specs for 416 HE.

Length 3.32", belt diameter ,655", base dia .635" ,
length base to to shoulder 2.860" , 30 deg shoulder.Ed

We'll have test gun for 416 HSM going in few days.

And once we get some fireformed cases we will get

final accurate specs and have info at reamer guys.ED

Our 416 HSM will have about 25gr more capacity than regular

50bmg, and as for actions if you add up the fat bolt non-bmg

actions, with .750"- .800" bolts, there are about a dozen, some priced

pretty reasonable.

For 416 HSM we can use a EU made primer I have some of, that

is tamed down a little for smoother ignition, and its cup is harder

than CCI 35s , so we can go quite high pressures. Rigging up

hydraulics on my huge press for easier case shaping.

When few cases fireformed we'll have exact specs for reamer guys.Ed

A new 2 mile shoot, Tonopah, NV 2-Mile Match Aug 24 - 26, 2017

Dates are August 24 to 26 (site zeros on the 23rd)
Got info from LRO site,

The Course of Fire is done and appears below. Couple of main points:
ranges 1,300, 1,600, 1,900, 2,200, 2,500, 2,800, 3,100, and 3,525.
The site is virtually flat, so slope is not an issue.....50 lb. maximum for rifles

NO weight limit for gear, but you and your team need to be able to move
it up onto the line in 2 - 3 minutes. No real limit to how the rifle is supported
(front rest is ok, so are bipods and/or, tripods) so are portable shooting tables.
You are allowed to obtain a site zero the day before the match starts,
all targets are all 36" x 36"

Here is picture of 416 HSM fireformed once,
next to bmg case we make it from and as we
improve wildcatting process next few weeks
some specs may make small changes, now from
base to shoulder is 3.45", case 3.97" long. Ed..

How long do you expect a case to last, after pushing the shoulder that far forward? That has to put some major stress on a 50 BMG case?

We annealed cases as we go, same deal as straightening bmg case

out completely when we did our 700 and I fired one

of them 35 time with full loads. Still good, check y-tube

video by Warner Tool where they straighten bmg

case completely, all the way out to max,

Then neck it clear down to 375 and shorten, real short,

just got to anneal.Ed

We figure the 416 HSM will get 525gr

target bullet about 37-3800.. With bullet

of G7 BC of .56 or so should be ELR champ,

with shooting team with expert wind doper.. Ed
