1:10 twist in a 243win

Hey fellas I've been reading up and researching on this and have found a vast number of opinions one way or another but my Howa in 243 has a 1:10 twist. Would it be a waste of time to try and work up a load using 105gr projectiles. yes I know the ideal twist for that weight is going to be the 1:8, but I've read conflicting opinions one way or another and figured Id ask you guys and see if there was any other insight I haven't ran across yet.. thanks fellas!

Try it.

If you can push 'em fast enough without blowing up that Howa, you just might find they'll shoot.

If it were me though I'd stick with bullets around 90 grains or less.

Save your components-
Spin the 1:10" twist Bbl off your Howa & use it for a tent/tomato stake.
Spin a 1:9" or 1:8" twist Bbl on & don't look back!

Is this a hunting rifle with a sporter barrel or a heavy barrel?

The 1:10 twist performs best with 70-95gr bullets (in my experience). Barrel life on a 243 will normally be relatively short enough as it is, so JMHO but it makes more sense to stay within its limits. WD

I wouldn't bother trying 105 grainers in a 10" twist.

Mark & Sam on youtube were shooting a Howa 10" twist 243win with 95 gr Berger VLD.

But like already mentioned, up to 95 gr match bullets will work even tho 95 gr Match projos would be marginally stable in the 10" twist.
100gr hunting bullets are good to go in the 10" twist.

For short range deer hunting, the 85gr Sierra bthp gameking is nice, and for big deer the 100gr Gameking is nice. Both are very accurate.

Anyone who is able to shoot 105gr match bullets in a 10" twist 243win must be thousands of feet above sea level.

Its a heavy barrel, I think ill try some of the Berger 80gr FB at first and see how those do.

I've had really good results with the Sierra 80gr Blitz bullets too. WD

I totally forgot about the 87gr Vmax, had a good friend that used those all the time, cant remember his twist but he had some awesome results. Very small groups....

What is the purpose for you rifle?

If it's hunting there are a vast array of excellent bullets that will work just fine in a 10" twist 243. One's I used successfully: Sierra 85 BTHP, Sierra 80 Blitz, Nosler 80 and 90 BT.

I have a 1:9, it will barely stablize the 105 Amax, and the 107 SMK goes crazy. Haven't tried the Hybrids yet.

I wouldn't buy a bunch then taking it on blind faith they're gonna be any better.

I"ve turned that 243 into a varmint rifle. 70gr Btip. One more trip to SD and it will be burned out. I've got a 1:8 waiting to replace it.

I'll juts go out on a limb and say no. Just got done with 105s and and an 11 twist. Keyholes at 50 yards. Look at the Berger site, here:

Their calc confirmed what I should have known. In my case They say no. Look, research before you buy and try. Now about pulling about 50 rounds and dumping the powder. . . .
