Next step up over SIII 10-50

I'm looking to start shooting LR benchrest after a hiatus, 600 and 1000 yards. I have a SIII 10-50x60 that I like on the rifle currently.

What is the current thinking if I want to upgrade? Is the Vortex Golden Eagle much of a step up? I've had a couple PSTs and thought they were optically poor for the price. Is the next step in quality the NF Competition? Any other scopes under $2000 I should check out?

Any sales on the Golden Eagle or NF Comp anyone would care to share?

Thanks in advance...

The first question you have to ask is "What shortcomings does the Sightron have?" Then you can look for something that addresses those shortcomings.

I would be looking for increased clarity/resolution. Being able to see 6mm bullet holes at 600yds in more conditions.

I believe I would worry about learning the game, loading ammo and maybe a better gun and other equipment like good rests and bags then worrying about the scope.

Go to a match, watch and talk to people. Even take your gun and shoot one. Guys will let you look through their scopes. Experience is the best teacher. It might make your decisions easier. The scope you have will let you learn the game and the money you save will help get the things you need. Matt

You would have to have absolutely perfectly clear air, zero mirage and perfect lighting. Then you might be able to see bullet holes. I've seen a bullet hole 1 time in perfect conditions and it cut a white line on the target. You'll never see anything in the black. In my opinion, your expectations far exceed the capabilities of current optic capabilities.

Okay, thank you everyone for contributing your opinions. I was hoping for more of a discussion of performance advantages of the SIII versus the golden eagle versus the Nightforce competition, but that's okay I appreciate everybody's input.

Sightron has some newer ED glass in the updated 34mm 10-50x's.. Price where someone would shop around though.. I'm thinking the Vortex Golden Eagle is the next value scope with ED glass @ 60x.. That is why I am ordering one..

I will be receiving an Athlon Cronus BTR on Mon/Tue. Top of the World quality. 34mm tube with all the features. These will compare with Kahles, S&B, March, Hensoldt and 7-35x ATACR. Maybe the $6,000 S&B and $7,000 Hensoldts really offer the ultimate? Not like I will ever pay to play in that league, but i've had an 8-32x 56mm NXS, and a nice Zeiss. Sold them..

There is a youtube just out of a Cronus BTR being shot 30x on a .50BMG. The scope base came loose... Tightened the base back, confirmed the 100yd zero, and then dialed a 1000yd hit... The glass is said to be superbly clear out past 1 mile. Bullet holes plainly visible at 1000, w/o resorting to highest magnification.

Selling at well under $2000. Dare To Compare! You will be overwhhelmingly surprised in a more than pleasant way...! And not just because of the savings!

Check-out the Athlon catalog and see all the reticle designs and specs. Lighter weight than most in this class, more compact with 2.4 & 2" ring mounting area.

A new alternative. Full lifetime warranty transferable forever with warranty & service done in Kansas. Scope is entirely made at the best Optical Works in Japan.
The new Ares series will be here in a few weeks. This series has all lenses and internal components from the same Japanese Optical Works being assembled at the Athlon facility in China. Lot of fine products do come out of China...

I am a recently appointed dealer with Athlon. I work as YOUR consultant. I have alerted the Forum Moderator that I intend to make a donation in buyers name for any scopes I might sell to members here. Why not compare and see for yourself?

The golden eagle glass is good, but its a step or two down. The NF comp scope is the best glass I have seen in a scope. However then have zero holding issues so they are out. March glass is probably 2nd best after the NF comp, but noticeably a step down. The best scope for the money is still the NF BR. Glass is very good and it holds zero. I like the March's features better, controls, reticles, weight, parallax, and the new HM glass should be as good as it gets. The golden eagle is too new to know how it will hold up mechanically but I am hopeful. The most important thing in a scope is its ability to hold zero and track. Glass is way down the list. In my experience with glass you get what you pay for. I have never seen in real life where cheaper glass compared to higher end glass, ever. And regardless of what I have read, when you spend more you get more. Good glass is not cheap to make, it will never be cheap to buy.

My mistake on the 1000. Jeff says "can see bullet holes without full magnification at 500yds" so, NOT 1,000yds mea culpa. He also says "amazing clarity at over 1 mile".

On my Cronus BTR thread, posted today, I did mention that I was at our local air field. It's a full length runway, but I was testing some moderate priced Japanese made 60mm spotting scopes. The Cronus BTR at 29x delivered great clarity, able to render the 2' tall and approx 6-8" diameter runway lights at about 1000yds with snap and vividness. With the right color bacground and lighting conditions, and a .338 or .50cal bullet hole, I would be able to see bullet holes. Doesn't mean that I could differentiate the exact strike position of a .2 moa group from 1000 but I have 15/20 vision.

I don't even have 34mm rings yet to mount this scope. Holding it with one hand on a Velbon medium capacity tripod did give some stability. The Athlon was very close to the performance of a Fujinon Super 60 spotter which was excellent up to 50x on the 20-60x zoom eyepiece. I also have Fujinon 7x50 m22 binoculars which are every bit as good as Zeiss, except Japanes optics will have more neutral color balance than Euro optics.

The real rendering tests wil begin when rings arrive and I can mark exact yardage and post up some test media to evaluate crisp detail and fine parallax focus.

One thing I did notice was that March prices their high magnification scopes cheaper than their 3-24x or 5-40x. This leads me to conclude that the lower magnification scopes are the better product. Typically the high magnification optic is way long and has little eye relief versatitlity. Aside from the 72mm Hensoldt which is a $12,000 scope there are no (eta: high magnification) scopes able to deliver full-magnification without some , if not lots of chromatic aberration and image darkening.

The Cronus BTR has a very long eye relief window at both magnification extremes.

The real point here is that the better clarity may deliver more than the higher magnification. If sold on March optics, great. The 5-40x might really do more than a variable with 60x or 80x top end. The Cronus BTR is a very impressive instrument, all Made In Japan. While the S&B 5-45x is a $6000 scope, you don't have to spend that kind of money to find excellence.

"Bullet holes plainly visible at 1000, w/o resorting to highest magnification." I am sure you could provide a picture of this optical feat. Or is this at 1000 inches, or maybe 20mm projectile?
Hell....... I can barely see bullet holes when I'm pulling the target. When I'm shooting, I'm lucky to see the spotting disk with my 50 power Sightron. Of course, I'm older than the dirt they used to make the berm.
