Rifle ballance

Hey guys I have not been able to shoot free recoil on my newest 6br and tried everything in the book to make it happen and shoot accurately. I stumbled on an article on the daily bulletin and it made mention on how important rifle balance is. It stated that the gun should balance around an inch or so in front of the action. I tried mine and it balanced 6 inches in front of the action. No good. All I had on hand for a quick test was a unopened box of 107 match kings. One box should weigh around 1.5 pounds. I duct taped the whole box to the back of the recoil pad and that balanced the gun about 1 inch in front of the action. Well it worked. Free recoil now shoots tiny groups. From what I have read the best way to add weight to the butt is drill a couple holes under the recoil pad and use bird shot with epoxy? Would this be the best way??

Not in my experience. Mine came loose inside the fiberglass stock. It would be better to use a carbide rod (broken drill bit is the cheap way) and make the fit tight to the drilled hole so it does not move. Tungsten rod would be the best if a lot of weight is needed. Free recoil needs to be practiced, getting that constant gap between shoulder and the gun is all important.
You can still fine tune the balance by changing the contact point of the front bag when you get the rifle closer to optimum balance point.

Yes no question regarding practice when shooting free recoil. I am just getting somewhat "half decent" at it. Before I added that weight, when I shot it free recoil the groups were unimpressive to say the least. And I tried everything under the sun to make it work except messing with the rifles balance point. Maybe ill hold off drilling and adding lead and see if I can source some carbide of tungsten. $$$$$$ I need 1.5 pounds of weight in the butt to balance it 1 inch in front of the action. That's a lot.

If your stock is wood you can drill 1" holes in under the butt plate and pour molten lead in the holes. Much heavier than bird shot. I have done it numerous times and works beautifully. Only thing to watch for is do not get the lead too hot. I don't have a melting pot so I use an acetylene torch to melt the lead in a tin can; one time I got it too hot and it actually melted the polyurethane finish on the stock in a small spot. Fortunately I was able to sand the damage spot with fine paper and sprayed (rattlecan) polyurethtane onto the damaged area and it came out as good as new. That was a factory satin finish. If it was glossy it prob would have not come out so good.

If you want tungsten carbide I have some 1" dia. pieces that are almost twice the weight of lead. Let me know if you want to pursue that route.

Get some hevy shot . 20% heaver then lead .

Lead and a TORCH? .....NO NO. That will put fumes in the air...(ionize?). I'm Shakey on the physics by do know that a club member had very high levels, Dr quizzed him and this was reason why. He would cut sheet lead to process to cast .45 slugs.

Tungsten carbide is not as dense as lead. Where are you getting that it is twice the weight?

Thanks, I was remembering molar mass... and I still had it backwards

Densities are:

Tungsten carbide is 15.63g/cm3

Lead is 11.4g/cm3

I bought tungsten round pieces from someone on this site about 18 months ago. The were 1" dia and about 2" in length. Just right for installing in the butt stock.

If you are worried about melting lead to make weight get a piece of copper pipe at Lowes and some heavy shot that is heavier than lead the smaller the better and mix it with epoxy and make a weight. Myself I tape a baggie to the side at the rear of the stock add lead shot till get the balance point I look for and weigh it add an oz. more and melt it and pore it into a mold and let it cool and turn to the desire weight. ........
