22 BR Trying NOT to reinvent the wheel.

I decided on Friday to go ahead with my new project, and it looks like I will be up and running within the next couple of weeks. My smith is THE MAN!!!

Anyway bought a Kreiger 1-12 twist 17# HV 31" to screw on one of my 1000 BR rifles. This will be strictly a PD tube. I want to minimize load development time, so I will ask you guys a couple of questions. 50 - 55 grain bullets. I have large quantities of RL15, Varget, H335, H4350, H4831, H1000, RL25, RL33. As you can see I am loaded up with slower powders. I checked a bunch of on line load manuals and web sites, and the only thing that matched is Varget. Several of them even sugjest RL7, which seems on the fast side IMO. I plan on using 450's and Lapua brass.

Anyway, anyone have any idea as to which powder works BEST, and also, of the powders mentioned above, which one works best? I would love it if I could use something I already have, but I have no problem buying a "better" powder if there is something that is "magic" out there. Also BBL length....is there any advantage to cutting the tube back shorter, or leave it at 31"?

Thanks,
Tod

Who said anything about RL17? Or are you saying to use RL17?
My mistake. I removed my post. You did in fact state RL7, not RL17. You might consider Benchmark, and Accurate 2495.

Edit: If I ever get around to having my 25BR built, I'll stoke it up with Benchmark, topped off with the BIB 88 grain bullets. When I have questions about twist rates, powders and bullet weights/lengths, I consult the Jedi-Master…. the "Ballistic Idiot".

Maybe i am wrong here.. but i don't think that i would consider any power that burns slower than RL15 or 203B with that weight of bullet.. now if you were going to use the 90VLD's.. well then RL17 and H4350 would be the powders to be looking at.

I would not go slower the RE15 or Varget with the light bullets. I would let it 31 because that will let you rechamber a couple of times. Matt

I was pleasantly surprised when I put together some 55's on top of IMR 4895. Didn't expect much with my 14 twist barrel, but they shot great. Seems to me that theraint nuthin that 4895 won't work for. jd

Thank you!! I don't know how I missed that article. I may need to rethink my CCI 450 choice, though. I have many, many thousand 450's, and only about seven hundred 205 match. The only small rifle primers I have ever bought. Are federal 205 primers available anywhere?
Federal primers have been scarce. When using VV135 I have had better accuracy, ES and SDs with BR4s than with 205 match.

I use 29.2 gr. of Benchmark to push 52 gr. Berger Varmint bullets ~3300 fps in my 22BR. 23 1/2" barrel. I love the 52 Bergers on coyotes. Bullet fragments inside and dispatches them before they hit the ground. I would have to think they would give you the desired results you are looking for on PDs.
