More Plain Jane Groups -- Improving

It was kind of gnarly for shooting groups today, with wind @ 10 to 15 MPH. I was able to move my range so as to shoot nearly dead into it though, and I don't think it affected me too much.

I cleaned and fired one fouling shot between each group. Been using some stuff called Gunslick CopperKlenz, not because I'm in love with it, it's just what I've got. I just brush with a bronze brush, and dry with a couple patches. Bore seems to be staying pretty clean. I'd admire any advice.

I've got to note that one of the best groups was #5, which I didn't pre-clean for. Hottest load, #4 with 25 grns. still showed no signs of high pressure. I guess I'll keep going up by a couple tenths to see if it is improving. Aside from that it looks like the best charge is the two lowest charges.

These aren't the bug holes I'm after yet, but I think I'll get there. jd

I checked your other posts about this rifle. A nice build. IMHO, I would evaluate the accuracy of this rifle with 3 shot groups due to the stocks rounded fore-end, sand bag rest, non-bedded, and probable non- competition trigger. Also, I always use flags for accuracy evaluation....it may be blowing in your face at the bench, but entirely possible to be multi-directional @ 30, 60, and 90 yards out. Even a switching 10:00 to 2:00 wind (which the average shooter will assume as a headwind) will have both a vertical and horizontal component affecting POI- substantial enough to the degree of accuracy I know you are seeking. Conditions are usually your biggest variable. Why not attempt to control it by firing in "like" conditions-i.e. flags showing same during all 3 shots...and record that info on the target.

Just for kicks, why not try shooting the same loads but without cleaning the bore. It's very common for a barrel to settle in after several fouling shots.
Agreed. It appears the better group is labeled, no clean. It could just be a lower charge is closer to the node.

Yeah, I also agree. There may be another node toward the upper end with this powder, and there is still room to go that direction.

I think my next plan with this powder though is to load more at that charge, shoot it dirty, and see how far it will let me go before opening up.

VaRandy, I've got no idea how fast. I am chronographless.o_O This load is kind of a start load, but it seems to get there in the blink of an eye.:p jd

If you just "gotta clean" because it is your nature, try marking your shots in order. I show up at some of my matches with a clean bore, I get 5 sighter shots, then go to the line. Some of my guns, especially some of the .22s, do not get to the accuracy niche until I have 10 or more shots down the tube......Just thinking that may be your case also....if your last couple of shots are in the tightest part of your group.....

Have you got any 4198 ?
Yeah I've got 4198, and will be working with it some more. But it hasn't been great so far at least at the levels I've tried.

On my other thread, a little further down the page I posted some new groups that are getting better, and shot with a dirty barrel. I think I meant to put those posts on this thread, and boned it.

I still haven't reached anything like high pressure, and that's fine with me. I'm getting closer to bug-holes all the time. I am afraid that I'm gonna have to take a break from accuracy testing and go shoot a few squirrels with 50 of the BLC loads that are printing a consistent .4-.5" group. jd

I'm going by my experience with a 20 Practical. H 4198 worked well in a Pac NOR 11 twist barrel. It shot 40 gr Nosler BT well. I don't think the 32 grs worked as well. Pressure can spike quickly.

Yeah, it seems that everyone with these 20's has good luck with 4198. Trouble is it just doesn't meter worth a damn compared to a lot of the other powders. It might be a mark of my laziness, but I love working with a powder that I know I can't weigh more accurately than my measure can throw it. jd
