New 195gr 30 cal from Sierra

Multiplying avg G1 by 0.51 will get you very close to the avg G7. In this case, Sierra has used their typical banded G1s, so you will need to make an estimate of the avg G1. However, using their highest banded G1, the corresponding G7 would be approximately 0.311. Although that may be a slight overestimate, it is only slightly behind the 200 Hybrid value of 0.316, and about 5-6% behind the 200.20X G7 BC value of 0.328. It looks like it has a secant ogive, so it might be a little less forgiving with regard to seating depth as some of the other TMKs are reputed to be. I haven't run the numbers, but at the slightly lower weight of 195 gr, it just MIGHT be possible to load these fast enough hit OBT Node 4 at reasonable pressure. Certainly the odds of hitting the OBT node with the lighter bullet are better. The advertised price of the Sierra is about $.05 less per bullet than the typical 200.20X selling price. If their names are any indication, I think the major difference is that there is no guarantee of cleans with 20Xs for the Sierras ;).

Tempted to build a 30-06 to take advantage of one of these great new heavy 30 Cal bullets. Getting squeezed by .308 case size and pushing pressure is getting old.

Don't forget the Berger BC is not a PEAK but is a Averaged G7 BC. Their are companies that use Peak BCs for advertising purposes. The fact that Sierra publishes some Banded BCs is a good indication. However some websites like MidwayUSA are only publishing the Peak BC, and not banded or averaged BCs. Some companies are purposely using high BC for marketing, in this case off the website they are providing you a segmented BC so I would trust it more. I would say take an averaged BC and compare it to the Berger BC which is also an averaged.

We will get them tested, but for now, you have G1 Averaged BC of 0.588 * 0.512 = G7 0.301 conversion. This is a conversion which is not perfect, but can get you an idea. Something like 5% behind the 200 Hybrid and 8% behind the 200.20X. I wouldn't expect the tested numbers to vary too far from this estimate.

Do a 30-284 and use the better (Lapua) brass.

I've been much happier with Lapua 30-06 brass than with their 6.5-.284 brass which would need necking up to .284 or .308 since Lapua does not make .284 or 30-284 brass. Been loading Lapua 30-06 for many years and it is quality stuff. But the rifle I've been loading for is a sporter, too light to shoot heavy bullets comfortably, and not really a 1000 yard rifle.

So while a 30-284 may be a slightly better 30 cal cartridge for this great crop of .308 bullets (certainly including the Berger offerings as well as the new 195 Sierra and the heavy Hornady ELDs), the availability of Lapua brass for the 30-06 has me favoring that cartridge.

I really enjoy the 30-284. I have one on a 700SA (single loaded) hunting rifle. The brass is all Gold box.

did some testing with my .308 F-TR rifle they were seated way out my CBTO was 2.35 going to have to get some more and do some more testing.20170220_085505 (1024x578).jpg

I have been testing these the last few months after Sierra sent me a few hundred to do so. Been too cold for long range testing as a final analysis, but here was my very preliminary powder test velocities. The first shot was from a clean cold bore and was also used to get my scope aligned. You probably can see that shot high just in the photo frame. After a few clicks adjustment, I shot low charge weight to high, then high to low with magnetospeed attached. I settled on 2667fps for further testing.

A full report is forthcoming after a 600/1000 verification. Spoiler: been very impressed with them....

I've been shooting/testing them since December. I'm through my first 500, have 1000 more to shoot. My home/winter temp was 2645, I chrono'd at BSWN and they went 2660ish. I'm chasing some other issues, and dealing with nonstop wind hasn't let me get a full read on them, but yes, they seem to shoot very well.
