unique powder

That sounds like a fast track to rifle blowing up. Get a reloading manuel or look on the powder manufacurers websites and use their online manuels

can unique powder be used with a 223 rem. 20 inch barrel 11/1 twist?
are you trying to make subsonic rounds? I've heard of people using pistol powders and light loads for subsonic rounds, but the risk of detonation on light charges and explosion on heavier charges is to high in my opinion

Unique is still too hot for subsonics. Cant get enough case capacity to make it safe and not have a secondary explosion, and too much will just explode anyways

The old Lyman manual listed cast bullet loads for almost all known cartridges with Unique powder. Probably could find a load there but it wouldn't cycle an auto. I've shot "gallery" loads 30.06 and .30-30147gr ahead of Unique quite successfuly.

Start low and work up.

As knowledgeable as most people on this forum are, do not take a strangers word on the internet. Too dangerous, especially talking about pistol powders in a rifle. Get and read a reloaders manual.

I agree with the advice to get a manual and I will add to it: Get a manual from your bullet manufacturer and another one from the powder manufacturer. Then get a Lyman manual just to keep the other two honest.

To the original question; Unique has been used for years (decades) for reduced loads in bottle neck cartridges. The 30-06 used 12 grains of unique for a 150 to 180 grain bullet. Today there are much better powders to use for reduced loads.

Unique.........? why ?

Blue Dot is great for quiet/reduced loads around the house in a 223......

or a 300 BLK..........

It depends, on many factors..Making a reduced load for plinking ?? I use Unique in just about every center-fire rifle I have owned..For that use with cast or lt-weight jacketed bullets. It is a powder I would not want to be without..Example, farmers buddies daughters wanted to shoot his 35Rem in a Marlin lever gun...Cool little rifle, nice scope..Kicks pretty good with full house loads..Solution, I used 8 or 9 grains of Unique as a starting load & 158gr Jacketed hollow point pistol bullet to get his girls used to shooting that rifle...It works really well, farmer now loads those himself just for plinking..For himself, his wife & grandkids ...Use your head & be careful toying around with these reduced loads..They are useful & very accurate/inexpensive for practice..Less wear & tear on humans & the rifle...Mike in Ct

Historically Unique was used for reduced loads. Don Lewis of PA Game news listed 3-5 grains Unique behind a 45 grain Hornet bullet in 222 for a squirrel load. ihave used 4 grains with a 40 with about 2500 FPS in 222. he also listed loads for 30-06 with cast bullets, and i think some others. This was in PA Game news in the late 70's. I have a copy somewhere. I have done it with a Swift and some puff-lon.

Blue dot is a proven powder for medium and low velocity rounds.

Again, historically.

Now I don't do it anymore. I would explore trailboss for reduced loads. Running Unique for speed is a fast way to lose your eyeballs.

Snert, help us all out U wrote..."Now I don't do it anymore. I would explore trailboss for reduced loads. Running Unique for speed is a fast way to lose your eyeballs." Is the stuff still safe in reduced loads??..Has the formulation changed ?? Now you have me nervous..TIA, Mike

in 223 you can start at 15 grs Blue Dot with 69SMKs and be around 2000 fps and work your way down till you get to 1,050 fps subsonic loads,,you will be around 8 grs Bluedot,,my CZ 527 9 twist shoots this load around 1.25 inches at 100 yards,,pretty dang quiet even without a can,,

can unique powder be used with a 223 rem. 20 inch barrel 11/1 twist?
I found a load using Unique powder in an old American Rifleman magazine. It called for 6.0gns of Unique with a 45gn bullet. I tried and found it to be very accurate(.5-.6" 5 shot groups @ 100yds)in my old Remington 788,12 inch twist,.223.

The most likely problems are accidentally getting a double charge or using too little powder and sticking a bullet in the bore.
Either way you can destroy your gun and hurt yourself.

Looked at my 223 BD load.......

12/BD & a 53 V max....around the house load....if the 17M2 isn't handy.......
