Yet another 'which 22 cal cartridge'

My project goal is to build a 'tactical repeater' setup rifle in a 22 cal cartridge. I have a Krieger 8 twist 27" MTU blank on the way. It will mostly be shot at steel/paper from the bench or prone/bipod so I don't mind a heavy barrel. I have a trued 700 in a McM A5a that I'll spin the 308 barrel off and have this installed on. I would like to set this up as a dbm mag fed repeater. I have a LOT of nosler custom comp 77s and 80s. My hometown range only goes to 200, but I have places in the woods that go to 1200. Accuracy is more important to me than hyper velocity.

I was thinking 22-250 for feeding, cheap brass, etc. 22br is an option as I have dies and lots of brass already, but will it feed from mags? I do have a slow twist 222 on a 700 in an AICS that I could build on and this would allow 223 or 223ai.

I just built something similar. I chose the 223 AI.....it was the correct choice. Man, it is a very fun little caliber to mess around with....Mine is on a 9 twist and it likes the 40 grain Vmax the best so far.....go figure.

A 22-250 or 22-250 Ackley or a 22 Dasher would do it all.

Collecting parts to do something similar.

My thoughts were, 6.5 saum, 22-243AI, and 223AI, in a switch barrel rifle.

Either Borden or Defiance action, Manners T6A stock, #3 or 4 Brux , titanium rings and a March 5-25x42 ( i think ) to keep the weight around 10.5 lbs.

I like the 223AI, i think it might work for you.....

I recently took a 700 trued it and went from 223 to 222m, as I am a nut, the thing is amazing compared to the 223 and shoots like a 222 but faster, consider.

As I get older, I like things simpler .

While I own seven different .224 centerfire chamberings, I find that only two get shot much any more.

My 223's can cover about 90% of anything I have any business shooting at with a 22 caliber bullet.

The 22-250 will cover the rest.

Both are easy to find components (brass), easy to load, easy to make shoot well, and don't require any troubleshooting to feed in repeater actions.

It will mostly be shot at steel/paper...

What will your "normal" shooting look like?

We all have places where we "could" shoot a mile, but very rarely ever do.

Think about your realistic scenarios.

What will be your longest shot that you take on a semi-regular basis?

I of course get to my local range the most often. But I get out into the hills which is when I get to stretch the legs of a few rifles. So, longest I CAN take is 1200 yards.

Your prayers were just answered with introduction of the 22Nosler. Your 8:1 twist barrel should accommodate the 75/80gr bullets for which it was designed. You can use ASC mags if necessary to increase usable COAL from 2.276 up to 2.315.
The rebated rim also allows you to use a standard 223 bolt head rather than a thinner BR or 6.8 bolt.

Just did some case capacity measurements. I didn't have 6.8 case on hand, but Nosler says the 22Nosler capacity is "about" 25% greater than a 223. LC 5.56 cases hold about 27gr of RL-17 to the base of the neck. Multiply by 1.25 and you get "about" 34gr. For comparison, my Lapua 22BR cases hold "about" 35gr.
So it does appear that the 22Nosler has the potential to give very impressive performance in the AR platform for which it was designed, given that 22AR ballistics are well known and the capacity of that case should be very close to the 22BR.

8 twist bench gun shooting heavy bullets possibly out to 1200 yards? You need the TTH throated 22-6mm Rem. Brass is easy to form, performance is spectacular.

Just do a 22 Dasher based on the normal rim thickness Norma 6 Dasher brass when it comes in. I would also leave the necks long that way it will be easier on your throat. Just neck it down and you are good to go. And it's performance won't disappoint...

ASbobcat, I believe the OP has a Remmy 700 short action bolt gun with the .473 bolt face. Your post is recommending AR 15 platform info. Not starting any disagreements but his 700 would call for a new bolt body for the 6.8 bolt or PPC. It wouldn't be worth the extra coin forked over when there is a plethora of great cases to build from. If it were my choice as far as build I've always wanted a 22-250ai. Or just the plain old 22-250 for less headache and more shooting. The old K.I.S.S. factor.

My mistake, I missed the 308 bolt face. Sorry for the confusion.

You're right, I didn't see the .473 bolt face.
