What's Your Best .22cal. You Shoot in Your Pistol/Rifle

My Browning Bullseye 5.5 likes Wolf match, The 541X (Volker) likes Eley Match (1058 fps), Broughton bbld Mdl 12 likes Eley Match (1066 fps), The stock mdl 12 likes both Wolf ME and Norma Match. I'd suggest that you try as many types as you can and see what you come up with as the winner. Clean between each batch and shoot sighters until it settles down.

Plus one on the cleaning advice. when I switched between lubed and "copper wash" bullets my groups grow exponentially until about 10 rounds then settles down again.

My Ruger 10/22 really likes the Wolf Match and Wolf Match Target with the latter shooting slightly tighter for me.

My 2 10-22 and Mark 3 like cci mini mags, and HV Winchester for most shooting. For accuracy RWS rifle target, Wolf match extra, Fed GM match. The higher you go in price, most of the time the better it will shoot. You just have to try it out. With a factory barrel you may not see big gains with the high grade ammo.

Out of 4 handguns, Winchester Dynapoints shoot on the avg. "affordably good". Wolf Match Extra and Tgt. shoot great in the only 2 i want to shoot the target grade stuff out of.

I have 1 lot of Win. 333 that shoots good enough out of a Supermunk (dying to see what happens when that dries up with the next lot #).

...and Blazer does well on the avg. also.

...as a hunter though that big HP'd 333 kills very well.

When I could get it, CCI blazer shot very well from my ruger 10/22 target.(even better since it was so cheap) Norma tac22 is all I can find now and I am also happy with it. I have a Sig mosquito that is notoriously picky about ammo, and Federal automatch is the only thing I can get to run through it.

I use Standard Plus by Lapua in my Anshutz, but RWS shoots just as tight. Slightly off topic, someone mentioned don't shoot high velocity ammo. Just yesterday I got a new Ruger 22/45 and via a thread adapter screwed on my Gemtech suppressor that is for 30 cal. I had some partial boxes of this and that, so I was just plinking at steel plates out of one of the windows in my house. I loaded my mags with Remington standard velocity match and about half way thru the mag. it gave a loud crack. My first thought was a baffle strike so I unloaded and took a look see with my bore scope. Nope no baffle strike so I went back to shooting. Of the several boxes of Remmi ammo I would have at least one come out super sonic. None of the other brands exhibited this wide spread of velocity. I went back through my notes and they shot like poo in my rifles as well. All 22's aren't created equal.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

I try all kinds of ammo in a new gun until I find the one that works best for that gun. THEN I decide if it is feasible to shoot it or store it until I can afford to shoot it. I have 3 Win 52D's of which 2 loves Tenex and one lives on Norma Match. Of course I shoot more Norma than Lapua. Every single rifle I have shoots a different ammo BEST, but almost all of them shoot very well with Norma Match ammo right now.

I agree with everything said so far , however I shoot smallbore every week and I havn't seen many rifles, target or hunting ,that won't shoot Centre X Lapua.

After you have digested all of the above suggestions, you will still have to see what your rifle likes best, and sometimes there are some big surprises! I shot IHMSA smallbore metallic silhouette for a bunch of years with a medium high end target pistol, and the rams at 100 yards can be a bit of a challenge - just hitting them doesn't count, they have to fall over. After trying an assortment of the usual suspects, I took a box of regular Winchester HV 40 grain roundnose cartridges (yup, the copper coated ones!), and that pistol absolutely loved them - the most accurate ammo tested at 100 yards, plus the added knockdown power of an HV round. For .22 rimfire pistol metallic silhouette, it doesn't get any better.

And no, I haven't got any explanation for why this particular pistol liked that round better than all the standard velocity rounds tested at 100 yards, but I went back to LGS and got a dozen more 100 round boxes from the same lot number.

My Anschutz sbr 64 likes Lapua center x or eley match, (black box). But i have sorted win subsonic and they shot an amazing well in my anschutz 64 and my CZ 452. Between the two guns there was only a slight accuracy difference.

If you go the Anschutz route, don't forget to try Federal Ultra Match UM22. Mine loved either Lapua CenterX or Midas+, hated Eley but shot light out (and won me a few comp) with UM22.

Schooner 8 , since you mentioned a Ruger 10/22 Take-down , I would suggest not starting with the expensive Competition stuff . All my 22 Ammo is old stuff and I have Tested a ton of different Brands for myself and friends . T-22 works great in a lot of different Rifles , so does Eley High Velocity , Wolf Match , PMC High Velocity , CCI Green Tag , and a bunch of different lower level RWS stuff I purchased long ago at reasonable prices . I picked up all these at Gun Shows years ago and don't know if the crazy $50-$70 / Brick prices ( for what used to cost $15- $30 / Brick for regular or lower level Target Ammo ) are still in effect . Can't help with the Pistol stuff .

In my Martini Mk lll Eley club for practice for competitions Eley match. In my Diorio Lapua Center x. Pistols CCI SV
