6mm va 6mm xc

Just ordered a Barlin bbl in Remington varmint profile . 26" 8 Twist I want to shoot 95 gr Sierra to- 108 gr bullets for prairie dogs and steel . Is 8" the correct twist , also which caliber is best ? 6mm creedmore or 6mm XC

Yes the 8 twist is correct. I would go creedmoor for sure...Wait until the Lapua brass comes out and you'd be set!

The 8 twist will work. The 6 Creedmor and the 6xc are about as close to twins as you'll get. There's no "bad" choice there. The gunsmith or the shooter will have more affect on which one shoots best than the slight difference in the two cartridges. So flip a coin. ;):) WD

Might want a 7.5 to spin the 110s or dtac 115s. They are long. Some guys are having luck in 8 and some aren't. They recommend 7 twist but that might too much for 87s

No need to wait for Lapua brass. You can easily make 6XC or 6mm Creedmoor brass out of Lapua 308 Palma brass and use a small rifle primer.

For large rifle primer brass, Lapua makes regular 308 win brass.

The 6XC brass can be made from 22-250 as well. Lapua also produces 22-250 brass.

As far as which cartridge is the best? I'd say 6 to one, half a dozen the other. Similar speeds, both accurate rounds. Only real difference would be what cartridge name you have stamped on the side of your barrel.

Why not keep all of your potential options open? Do a change order to say a 7tw or if that makes you nervous, a 7.5. I've learned over the years to never say never and you just never know when a bit more stabilization on a new, sleeker slug may be needed. From what I've read, you need to be near 3400 fps to shred an 87 so 95s should not be close to worry territory. I have a 7.5 Krieger in reserve for the new 110s and 115s. Fun, ain't it?

I run 75gr Sierra HP Varminter bullets in 24" barrel my 6mm Remington at 3480 fps. But I think my barrel is a 1 in 11" twist. Load is not maxed out either. I tried 87gr V-Max bullets in it, but they weren't very stable with the slow twist. Could barely get 3/4 MOA accuracy and there was an oblong hole in the target every now and again. The 75gr Sierras give me 1/4 minute accuracy.

My 6XC is a 1 in 8" twist barrel at only 22" long, but it will still push 105gr VLD's to 2980 fps if I load it at max with RL-17. Current load with H4350 pushes the 105s around 2900 fps. Thinking about turning it into a varmint rifle and using the same 75gr Sierra bullets as my 6mm Rem. Kind of curious to see if it will run the 75s as fast as my 6mm Rem with a load under max pressure as well.

I have a 6xc with a 26"10twist sporter weight barrel that I shoot 75gr Vmax in quite often. Running it across the chrony shows me 3530 to around 3540 with R-15, Norma brass, and Rem. 9 1/2 primers. Accuracy is very acceptable for woodchucks and coyotes. Results are well worth the effort IMHO.;) WD

^^^^^ What he said. If you have the time and tooling to make it, this brass turns out great. If not, I make and sell both 6mm Creedmoor and 6XC in Lapua large and 'Palma' small primer in the Reloading Classified section.
Great choices either way, you won't go wrong with either caliber; all variables being equal, performance is so similar.

I love reading these threads! As has been said the 6mm Creed and the 6 XC are very close, I have both and also love my 6X47L's. I really can't see a preference value for any over the other. Each is my favorite when I'm behind the lens watch the hits. Seem I lean toward the 6 XC but don't know why, maybe because I have a special reamer I've used several builds. Now that Lapua's making creed moor brass it's a great consideration. Would love to read a solid reason why one is better than the other. I believe any choice is a great little 6. My two cents anyway, Rick

I had good luck with 75gr Vmax's with RL15 in my 6 xc with 1-8 twist. It's the lightest bullet I have used but it grouped great almost as well as my model 70 bull barrel with a 1-12 twist which loves both 75gr Vmax's & 70gr BlitzKing in front of Varget.

At some point before this thread dies you will hear about the magical 30% extra barrel life that the XC poses

What are they getting for barrel life out of the 6XCs?? I only got about 1450 out of my 6 Creedmoor 8 twist Proof barrel....
Rumor has it, from about, 1,800 on the Low side to,.. 2,400 on the high side ( Several reports of, 2,100- 2,200 rds ).
Depends on,.. Powder heat Index #'s, keeping barrel cool, cleaning regimen, etc.
However they ARE, extremely accurate with, 7.5 and 8 twist barrels for great results with, most 80 to, 110 grain bullets ( I have no experience with, the 112's - 115's ).
Mine "BugHoles", in the 2's and 3's with, 107 gr. SMK's @ Lite Jam and 40.7 grains of, StaBall,.. "Thrown" chgs.
Same Powder charge, gets the 103 ELD-X's into sub 1/2 MOA, for my Yote / Antelope, load.
