222

Stevens SA, SAV-2 trigger, NSS lug & nut, Shilen 21" bbl, Warne bases, Burris insert rings, Sightron 36, still unsure about the stock. I have an old Savage BVSS stock that I am thinking about modifying some on the forend, but still undecided.

One of the most inherently accurate cartridges ever developed. Hunted ghogs with a Rem 700 for many years and when the barrel went I rebarreled to a 223.

With 50 grain Noslers, IMR 4198 or BLC2 and Rem 7 1/2 primers you should be able to shoot sub 1/2 moa groups.

Out to 200 yards it has no equal.

the sleeved actions were very popular in the 70-early 80's for br 100-300. you my have a real find, as I had a number o them and they all shot under .200 when I did my work.

check the bbl and see who did the work, if it was Hart, either Clyde and JR, or Robert and W they are outstanding. if it does not shoot then it is worth getting it re bbl ed as you have a jewel - most had a 20z trigger

And a nice group with it. Rig pics to follow........

Ordered 5/4, received 6/8.

Now to put it all together.

I could not let the winter go by without a new build and the 222 Rem was it...sort of. I noted Lapua was making brass and I love their product. I hunt varmints and wind is a given, so speed is aiways needed. The 222 Rem's inherent accuracy is noted, but MV is not as I need, so I decided to modify the case with proven accuracy inhancing changes. Shoulder angle to 30° and body taper reduced by .010" at body/shoulder junction. New shoulder moved forward .055", shortening neck to .266". Case volumn is increased and I hoped with fast powder I could achieve 3500 fps with 52 gr bullets. Ordered reamer from JGS and dies from Whidden(based on reamer print). Kreiger heavy varmint, 14 twist finished at 30"...25fps/1". After fireforming brass, initially with COW...not adequate, so ff with full load. This gun is ACCURATE! H 4198 and IMR 4198 are excellent. Latest testing achieved 3500 fps and very small groups. Bolt lift easy and primers look unfired. Reloaded and primer pockets are still very tight. I will test some 55 gr bullets, just for fun, but damn, the 52s are lasers. The target is busy, but has loading data.tgt.jpg

My father loaded up a few rounds for a Sako L461 'Vixen' in .222 mag. that was his mother's gun she used for 'camp meat'. It is a late 50's model, has not been shot since I was a kid (born in '62). He found 3/4 powders under 52gr Sierra's shot 1/4 MOA groups at 50yds and put a grin on his face. He is 79 and suffers from macular degeneration so he shoots at 50yds these days but it sure rekindled fond memories from his past...mine too!

PicsArt_02-04-03.25.50.jpg I'v increased charges of IMR and H4198 but case fills into neck. LT 30 has very small granules, and the above 52 Tuckers were not fast enough, so I increased charges as there was a good bit of room. Today I got the desired velocity and found another accuracy node. There was no signs of excess pressure, so I will nudge the charge to next node if pressure doesn'the show up. This little case is very efficient and very durable. I'v yet to have the slightest resistance to bolt lift.
