New build recommendation (308, 6.5-47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor)

I am going to build a new hunting- longrange fun rifle. I'm building a 7lb rifle plus optics. Thinking a Surgeon sa, a Proof Research barrel 20-22". I'm asking for some advice on what round would do the best with this size barrel. What expected velocities would I get. With the 6.5 Creed and Lapua shooting 140 Berger Elite and the 308 178 ELDX bullets.

For long range, I'd go with more than a 20 to 22 inch barrel. You'd be handicapping yourself with powder selection thus opening up another can of worms.

I would anticipate 2700-2750 in the 6.5 Creedmoor with 140's in that short of a barrel using 'warm' loads. In a 26" barrel and near max loads I have obtained 2850-2880 fps with a 140 Berger hybrid in a 6.5 Creedmoor.

I have 6.5x47s (and 308s) in both 16" and 22" barrel lengths. The 16" rifles are lightweight "carry all day" rifles and the 22" rifles are more for range use. I find the 16" rifles to be so handy that they end up taking both duties.

The reason for the shorter barrel. I because I will be using a suppressor. The suppressor is 8" long. I already have a GAP 6.5 4S for my main hunting rifle. This is for varmint hunting and shooting steel for fun out to 800-1000 yards.

IF you must use as short a tube as you are describing, stick with either variation of the 6.5 or a 260 Rem. The 308 will be handicapped at 1000 yards. If your max range will be 600, then it's strictly a decision as all three will work fine. The 6.5s are the best choice if wind is a huge factor.

I think I would go creed personally, high BC, readily available ammo even if you hand load this is nice, and I believe it was just announced that Lapua will be making creed brass. Unless you are just set on using small rifle primers like the 6.5x47 has I think the creedmore has the upper hand. I would only go 308 if barrel life was a huge concern or Elk were on the list.

I believe the new Lapua creedmoor brass is small rifle primer.

The Creedmoor and 47L have identical ballistics. Now Lapua Creedmoor version will be different but that is like comparing 308W to 308 Palma.

I am a 47 guy, and the reasons are, it is a VERY accurate round, not at all fussy about anything." seating depths, powder drops, neck tention, it will shoot no matter what you do. And I get 2850Fps from 140 Gr Bergers with no problem, and also good barrel life. I will not slam a Creedmore, it is a great round, especially if you do not reload. But it is not as efficient as the Lapua, And the Lapua is setting a lot of records right not. But to each their own.
