Advise for factory 243 and factory ammo for coyotes

I have a friend that is looking for a factory 243 and with the combination of factory ammo to shoot coyotes from 300 yards and out in winds of 10 and 20 miles an hour. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hornady Superformance 75gr V-Max for the ammo.

How much is he looking to spend on the rifle? New or used? If below the price of a new Cooper, Kimber, or Dakota, then any of the usual suspects (Remington, Winchester, Savage, CZ) produce decent rifles with the occasional dud (or sparkler). Choose based on personal preference, price, and features (trigger quality/adjustability, detachable mag, stock fit, barrel interchanegeability, etc.).

Patience could yield a nice used rifle for a good price -- maybe even a nice used custom rifle. [A used .243 varmint rifle could have a toasted barrel, though.]

I'm assuming that pelt damage isn't a concern.

Since you mention shooting out past 300 yards in a 20 mph wind, I would go with heavier bullets such as nineties. Even with them wind drift will be dramatic, measured in feet or even yards.

I've killed a lot of coyotes and deer with my 243 on the desert. In my younger and dumber days, I killed a couple bucks where my windage correction was measured in "deer lengths." I guess I'd still lob bullets at coyotes in those circumstances, but no more with what I consider valued game animals. jd

Not sure how they would perform on coyotes but the Winchester supreme 95g nbts did very well on dear. Also would more than buck the wind at those ranges. Also the same with the 55g would work great in less wind. Both of these were very accurate in my factory rig a few years ago.

At those ranges a typical deer type bullet wouldn't expand much on a song dog.

+1 but with a 20 mph wind at 300 and out I would shoot whatever I could hit them with. In my area the chance of getting a yote to step out for a 300+ yard shot in a 10-20 mph wind is highly unlikely.

+1 on the superformance. If he hasn't found a rifle and has an open mind on caliber choice, the .224 caliber also works great for coyotes. Many more bullet choices and recoil will be much less. Also if he doesn't reload, ammunition options are huge. If it's going to double as a deer rifle, I'd recommend the 75-90 bullet in 243 for coyotes.

IF YOU CAN FIND THEM FEDERAL PREMIUM 85GR BTHP SIERRAS THEY DO U A GOOD JOB !:D

for Deer Barnes makes the 80TTSX in factory. I temporarily parted from; 85hpbt/90hpbt GAMEKINGS from sierra but still have tons of them; just to try the 85tsx from Barnes and 3 for 3! so far with reloads, love those Barnes bullets with lighter calibers.

This will be a coyote only rig.
I guess another question is if the factory rifle needs work, ( a dud ), which model would be easiest to Bed, different trigger, barrel, etc., which one would be the one to go with?

Diddo. I do believe the person may want to consider a 223 Rem with a tighter twist for heavier pills for the stated conditions, unless they desire the 243 Win for deer too. If I could only afford one rifle, I'd go 243 Win. Great for varmints, deer and serious long distance target.

He decided on a Kimber Hunter in 243. Guess we will try the superformance Vmax in 58 & 75 grain. This is a windy day coyote rig with varmint bullets. The local gun shop has also federal 70 grain nosler Bal tips, remington high performance in 80 grain, federal 80 grain soft point, winchester 80 grain jacketed soft point, nosler 85 partition, hornady custom lite reduced recoil, 87 grain SST.

I shoot in those conditions of open range and hills/gullies, winds from 0-25 mph with a all stock Savage M10, 22" bbl, 1-9.25" tw, 55g & 58g factory loads from Winchester & Hornady.
Of course I usually don't call coyote when wind is past 13 mph.

5spd, I don't think that I've called or killed near the coyotes that you have, but I've killed quite a few. When it comes to calling, I don't think I've been successful more than a half dozen times when the wind was blowing, say 15 mph or more.

And as far as distance shooting at the ones that are sometimes spotted in that kind of breeze, well my success hasn't been all that great either. jd

Yup if it's thats windy and one shows up and hangs at 200 or more yards I will let it walk till next time......I don't like windy days unless it's at the range for practice.

I have never had any luck calling in coyotes in the wind either. Stacy's got great advice with those Sierras. I used them in a Remington R-25 for a while. If you don't care about keeping the fur, they will shoot very good and dismantle whatever you hit with them. As far as a factory rifle, I still think the best bang for the buck is a Tikka.

I guess Im the only one that does not like the 85 HPBT gamekings of sierra. Always had runoffs. The zero @ 200 yards put me 3 inches high at 100. And it has a bc of a loaf of bread. Accurate tho.
I would like to try the 85 varminter and see what that is like.
