First Custom Build Caliber

Looking for some input.. I am going to be putting together a custom build, so far the only semi custom I have is a 6.5cm cretirion barrel on savage action , glass bedded in laminate stock. It is a very accurate rifle .. have taken it to 1000 with good results , but still practicing and hoping to compete in pb f class someday. Now I am trying to decide on caliber for the custom build, I have been leaning towards the 6 xc.... I will be using it mainly for punching paper some steel , and maybe a little wood chuck hunting. I was pretty set on 6 xc until a buddy of mine said he thinks it's too close to my 6.5... is it? I feel like that are different animals ? He's more of a hunting guy than target guy though so maybe that's where he is coming from? Any input would be great thanks.

For serious long range I like my 6.5x47. For practice and Ftr I love my 223 rifles geared to shoot 75-80gr bullets. Accurate, cheap to shoot, little recoil, and helps practice the wind calls.

Lapua is soon to release 6.5 Creedmoor brass.........

Their 6.5 x 47 is available too.........

This is one of those questions where the answer is:

"It depends..."

What is the wind like over a period time at the range where you want to shoot?

What experience do you have calling wind shots?

What is your tolerance for recoil?

Do you reload?

What scope do you intend to use?

Here is a short but concise article about your question:

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com...ming-cartridge-types-for-f-class-competition/

While I enjoy shooting the smaller cartridges such as the Dasher and BR, the x47's are getting a lot of attention everywhere these days. Be aware that when conditions are windy some of the best competitors shoot the bigger cartridges in 7mm and .30 caliber specifically the .284 Shehane and the .300 WSM. Look for the wins by Shiraz Balolia in the F-Class Team and Individual wins.

I like the combination of velocity and high BC so I shoot a 6.5 GAP 4-S (6.5 RSAUM) most of the time since I shoot at windier ranges. I can also move up the 7mm WSM to shoot the real heavy weight 180's or even the 195 for fun.

If wind is a lesser consideration then the 6.5x47 Lapua, the XC or the Norma Dasher would be a good choice.

Regards.

We will start with optic... not set yet once I get the ball rolling I'll be watching used section pb for what catches my eye?..

Wind ... I shoot mostly on our farm... if it's crazy I either won't shoot or go out just for practice ... other wise I am not terrible at wind ( not as good as most of you guys pb) I started out with 223 than 22-250.. I feel those helped my wind calls a fair amount.

im not recoil shy at all.. but would kind of like to stay under 6.5 for this one I think? And maybe next one do some kind of 7mm ?

As of right now my friends I shoot with can't really reach 1000 they like to shoot more at 500... so that came into my concidetation .. how ever I still stretch my legs ..

I like a moderate recoil and a good BC, so if I were going to try a custom I think I would go with a 473 bolt face, and then decide if I want to go up (7mm) or down 6MM. If up, I would look at 284, down a 6 creedmore and 105-107's. I would build it so I could shoot it F-class, buy a good scope that is better than the gun, and I would put a Jewell in it. After that, try whatever suits ya, and if you don't like it, put a different barrel on it! (for fun, a 6.5 SAUM and 140 VLDs are just plain shockingly fun on steel)

Snert, you hit 2 things I had my mind made up on , 1. being 473 bolt face for that exact reason if nothing else 500 later I could be off running down road with new caliber if desired...... 2. Jewel trigger already decided after feeling a couple... I think I am going with the 6xc... just seems like a great accross the board round...

I have had .260 Very nice round. I went to a 260 Imp. 1000 yard Winner . Barrel life Fair.

I now shoot a 6.5X55 Swed. On my 2nd Barrel Won a couple 1000 Matches a lot of 2nd and 3rd. ( my lack or wind reading ).
The New Berger 140gr. HB are fantastic ..
Good Luck

I personally think the 2 cartridges are different enough to validate owning one if that is what strikes your fancy. I love my 6mm Competition Match rifles.

I have a 260, 6.5x47 lapua, AND a 6XC... they are different.

The 6XC is badass... 7.5 twist 105 bergers... it one holes... shot the smallest group with it out of everything i own to date..

How many .260 Ackly rounds did you get before barrel went away? What speed and what bullet? Want to know what to expect for mine.
