What has made group size shrink since the early 80's

You cant compare racing to shooting. The very highest end Benchrest rifle will run you 4000.00 tops. There is no top end with racing. You can spend 4k on a set of heads. You cant be totally broke to win but you dont need much. Most guys have 4k tied up in a few savages and remingtons in the safe. I always preferred to have one good rifle over 4 ok ones. Priorities.

I have a couple of savages I don't have
$1200 in that hold their own with the customs . It hasn't change because you moved from here . Larry

I would venture to say better technology in the offerings and quality of the offerings in todays reloading and much of the shooting industry.

Larry, all I know is if you make an excuse then you'll never win. If you think your handicapped because you dont have the money the next guy does you wont win. I shot decent against others with alot more time and money, I never felt handicapped.

I have Been handicapped all my life . Polio
Yes you did shoot good . I think I did also and still do .
I never felt I was handicapped
Because I shot a savage . In fact I still don't . I never cried and about worried about The heavy guns like some . Larry

Sometimes, with work and ingenuity, you can turn junk into gold.
A fellow metalsmith I know rifles his own barrels, laps them and finishes them. A few of those barrels have shot some nice groups. Oh, he starts with old car axles. He has a great deal of skill and more patience than Job.
He builds all his own equipment too.

I am glad to hear that, it didnt sound that way from your posts. However there is a distinct advantage to shooting a HG, which is why theres 2 classes. If theres no advantage why did you need to shoot them? A HG has far less recoil and tracks better, big advantages.

The reason I shot a heavy gun was it was far cheaper to build And we never worried about what others shot. I have a couple of guns that can shoot in lite gun all it would take is a $ 2500 dollar scope . Like you said tell me shoot money don't make a difference .

Weaver 36x=$400, Leupold comp=$1000, Vortex 15-60=$1500, all lightwieght. I shot a $850 Leup 8.5-25 and my groups didnt shrink when I went to a NF. Weight doesnt cost money. Just a little planning.
To answer the ops question, I think like everything else, knowledge takes time. The longer a sport evolves the higher the bar is raised. To me its knowledge that has shrunk groups.

Who's knowledge Mine hasn't changed an my gun shoot smaller.
So far you have show me how to spend $400 to $1600 .
Why would I want to change scopes what I have work fine . Won last week against 14 of the best shooters at the club. Better say 13 I took a total rookie . Be shot my old blue handycap Savage and finished 6 Larry

My equipment is better now than in the 80s and that doesn't hurt but what has helped me improve was to go shoot against the best in my area. The wealth of knowledge that can be drawn from them is priceless. They know how to handle the gun, shoot the conditions and load more accurate ammo than I. They have been very helpful with my questions, they explain the conditions to me (I still can't read wind but that's no fault of theirs). I agree that the knowledge the best shooters have to offer newbies like me has made me a better shooter, loader, tuner. Do they still kick my tail, you betcha but I'm closer now!

Education. We have learned more about the mechanics of internal ballistics to make better powders, primers, cases and bullets. We have learned more about metalurgy to make more accurate barrels and better fit them to the action. We have learned more about the mechanics of the shooter and rifle combination and what it takes to be a better unit when shooting.
Yes, money has a role, new processes and better gear do cost more to make but without education none of this can happen and a shooter who is not educated in the process will not likely shoot well.

I think there are more accurate shooters involved, with top notch stuff and knowledge, with a different mind set and desire to reach the obtainable groups they see other shooters shoot. The more people that compete, the Higher the Bar becomes. The people that chase the bar do it well, and shrinking group size is the result. This is a sport when ADD is you friend.

I would say my biggest improvement has been my tuner . It has change my way and method of reloading . Larry
