Am using 4831sc now, but looking at experimenting with h1000. Got some room in my case with 4831, but not sure if I got room for the 60-63 gr that I'm hearing about with h1000. Are these people compressing? I haven't even checked yet how this looks in my cases. Touching the lands the bearing surface/ boat tail junction is at the neck/shoulder junction. Would rather not crunch powder, thoughts please.

I would imagine they are seating long.
7Saum was designed around 2.825, but can benefit from a longer col.
The Berger 180vlds can shoot well from 2.825 col, but a faster powder is needed to make use of less case volume. If that is your intent; I'd recommend N560, of reloader 17 as potential alternates to h4831sc.

H1000 works very well with rsaum.whats your freebore?

I shot H1000 in mine with a 180 JLK. The oal was around 3.00", if memory serves me correct. I tried Retumbo but H1000 gave better 1000 yard accuracy.

I just found a load for my 7saum with H1000 and 195 EOL Bullets. The gun is throated out for the 195s and I don't know the freebore.

CCI br primers
62.6gr H1000
Norma 300 saum brass necked down and turned to 4thou neck clearance
10thou off the lands

Load is running right at 2900fps and last group I shot was at 300yds and measured .541" ctc.

Hi Guy,
I've developed an interest in the 7SAUM, several people have told me to stay away because its a barrel burner. I understand that speed costs, however I thought that H1000 may extend barrel life, the big question is how much?

What have you guys learned regarding barrel life since June? Any help is appreciated.

I have loaded the .264WM for years with compressed loads. It is normal, and I would suggest preferred to have a compressed load over one where the powder sloshes around in the case. It is an indication that you are using the slowest possible powder to achieve your desired velocity.

You can download a Barrel Life Calculator from this site, and play around with different powders. Try VV N165, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that it shows the best barrel life. It has lower heat potential than H4831 or H1000.

Great tip RonAKA, Where do I find the heat potential for H1000 or Varget?

If you download that calculator which is in Excel, there is a note in the heat potential box. You read the note and enter the value of the powder you are considering. Keep in mind that the heat potential is based on weight, so you can't just look at heat potential alone. If you select a powder with 10% less heat potential but need 10% more powder then you have not gained anything. I have not tested that theory in the model, but I would expect that is the way it works. Here is a image of what the box looks like. But, as I say you can't use these numbers to make a judgement without considering powder weight.

Thanks Ron,
For some reason your image has more info than mine.

It's also located in Quickload if you use that. It's the first field labeled "Heat of Explosion / Potential".

Good man Sheldon, that is good to know.

I picked up a 7SAUM for competition shooting. I am going to be working on loads myself. Was thinking of trying RL25 from the main page of accurate shooter information on the 7mm page. Has anyone tried it?

You'll have no problem finding a good load with the 180's or 183'S with H4831SC or N165. No need to experiment any barrel life away. H1000 works well, the other two work great.

Chris, You're likely to get more responses if you start a new thread with something like "7 SAUM and RL25" in the heading. Just saying...
