Shehane st1000 stock, any good?

Macmillan fibreglass stock 3 inch wide forend I think

R they still used quite a bit for 1000 yard br

got a chance to pick up a new one as a base for a backup build.

Question will a full inlet for a Borden BRM work the the BAT 3 lug. I think the rear screw will fit without much change and then I can drill a new front screw if need be, any thoughts as my bat is off getting a barrel for a dasher and the stock is on the east side of the country

Depends how fussy you are, most are very crooked. The hole is no where near center so you need to open it up for a the pillar anyway. Do you have a mill? cause you will need it...... If you need someone to do it, let me know...... jim

Maybe you're confusing the ST1000 wood v. fiberglass? I saw the issues with a laminate Tracker but not with the fiberglass. I have a Stiller P1000 RBLPRE in the fiberglass version and it is a very nice stock.

No i'm not confusing it with a wood stock, I set it up on the mill and indicated it and it was terrible, I even called him about it........ jim

johara are is right. Shehane doesn't sell a straight stock. I got a Shehane MBR, it's not straight. My gunsmith did an amazing job salvaging it but it amazes me how many he sells knowing how crooked they are...it's a joke around these parts.

Have one and LOVE it. State mid-range champion and 5th place at the mid-range Fclass nationals this year. Picked up another one for a lr 284. Smith did mention it took some work to get everything lined up on it. This will be my third...

The fiberglass one was already on the rifle when I got it so it may have been that way. I just based it on the fact (or so I thought) that McMillan did them for him and they usually get it right. I getting a McMillan MBR insetted and bedded right now. I saw it in the mil and it was straight as an arrow.

Add me to this list. I spent many hours correcting a lot of problems with a ST 1000. Quality control....don't think so.

Alex is right it can be corrected, only i added the plates and it tracked perfectly, in fact you could pull it to the rear over an inch and the dot would stay in the box. The holes for the rear plate were on the edge of the stock for the inserts. ...... jim

not wanting to offend the maker of the stocks or anyone else, just asking as if one is spending a grand on travel bullets reloading meals and so on it would be a shame to have inferior equipment from the get go.

It seems a good price in the frozen north on this stock and it is going into a backup gun,

if it turns out there is actual enjoyment in the 1000 yard frustration game then at the end of 2017 a choice would be made to upgrade the stock to match the first one on the main gun, I am also working with a guy to get a wood stock done for me up here but I am afeared it may cost more than getting a second deep creek one. Also the second gun stock. ie the tracker may be a somewhat easy flip to the 1000 yard shooters in BC as quite a few of them still use factory stocks

Also a guy in my home state/province also does stocks and competes so he could probably touch up the shehane for me if it is a little off,

The deep creek stock is really nice in the bags

the stock up here is under 900 bucks, a bargain cause that is only about 46 bucks American. Ha-ha and that is for a full inlet.
if someone is offended the title to this thread can be changed

thanks for the honest and direct opinions, we all struggle to get the best equipment before we get to the line

Jeff

Alex Wheeler put a plate on the front of my warped Shehane and it tracks great.

I have asked the retailer for a weight on this stock to see if it can be made to be underweight and then maybe a tracking plate if necessary Jeff

I now come to find out I can get a tooley MBR for the same price full inlet and new

are the comments about the same as the stock would have the same resale value up here

Jeff

I'm curious as why you need a back up rifle? I only have one light gun but carry parts to fix things that might go wrong. Unless you have two identical stocks, you'd also have to have extra bags/tops etc. I would never discourage someone from buying another rifle, but it sounds like you already have a Cadillac and now you're wanting to build a used Taurus. No disrespect meant, just curious.

Depending on what you want to do with it, because the butt has a round bottom and they don't track as good as a flat bottom. It should have the same rear configuration as your other gun or now you will need a different rear bag........ jim

well back home again so I can answer. Here is a tentative list of guns that one might want to build or get built to enjoy the long range BR game and some that have been of interest:

1. main gun built by the best in a dasher for Montana and elsewhere if I enjoy the sport DONE

2. back up gun in a nice stock that should work IN PROGRESS so that you can take more than one gun to the range and use a light gun and a heavy gun to see and LEARN what works and what may not, yes it may not be as good in the stock or barrel department but until one tests the barrel on the first gun who knows which shoots better or what bullets may need to be used, Bat 3 lug action melonite for speed in a dasher

3. another Borden in a Tooley MBR as I have the action trigger and barrel as a spare right now, all I need is the stock so another build perhaps on a 6.5 by 47 with the stock you can hang onto, never had a 6.5 by 47 and it looks like fun as our new 1000 yard range 4 hours away can get very windy and tricky as it sits on the side of a mountain at altitude,

4. would like to try a Borden DROP PORT in a dasher, not sure of the stock yet, perhaps I could get a stock modified for the switch barrel and the stock could work for both the dasher and the drop port, yes I know one may wish to glue in the gun but only AFTER IT HAS BEEN PROVEN ON THE BACKUP OR TRIAL GUNS, experimenting with glue ins can be very expensive as you need separate stocks and actions for each experiment,

5. lastly for the light type guns I would like another BAT 3 lug melonite as I really liked my 100-200 yard BR bat,

so in sum for the light type guns it would be nice to have 3 yes THREE good guns capable of winning from time to time and be able to take the 2 guns you are fond of at the time to a match that you travel to, sorry to tip my hand as I do not want to be seen as an easy mark when I pull up to the range next spring, oh there is the guy with money or at least a wish to accumulate more guns,

and so what if you lose 500 beans on a gun, I am older somewhat retired, somewhat nuts, and wish to try to be able to COMPETE with the big boys or living legends on a level playing field, and wish to what is that word ENJOY MYSELF by trying a few guns, NOW if you can lend me those guns for a weekend I will pay you as it is cheaper than building one to decide it is not for me at this time,

now onto one last gun

the real heavy and not so fun gun to pack up the hill to the bench, a monster 80 pounds of living aluminum, 42 inch wide and so on,

well how about taking a maxi tracker to a cnc machinist and carving the stock down to 4 inch wide and less length on the sides, and slimmer on the butt but not the tracking area to reduce the weight down to say 20 pounds without barrelled action on a Borden or bat, then wait for SEB to breed a MAx and Neo for the new rest to take on the 1000 yard game, (then I can use a SEB for everything and not pull my back out with the MAX or aggravate my stomach hernia much, and then perhaps more interest in the sport, why you ask, it seems somewhat hard to buy rests that work in a three piece, or heavy front like a viper (had 2 of them) without having to be able to change the front bag width 6 times in a day for those of us who have a few guns to take to the range,
silly perhaps to build or buy a BIG gun but would like to try a hundr3ed rounds on one and nobody seems to be stepping forward to let me experience this, even though it is near Christmas,

so a long explanation and not a terribly good one as it may be smarter to just build 2 guns on a deep creek type stock and be done with it, but what happens when I finish last for 2 years what fun did I have,

later eh

Jeff

I also have a couple of rear bags to fit the different stocks so that is also covered, thanks Jim, always nice to have great shooters post to answer questions,

another thought if I build 5 guns and lose 1000 per gun is 3 years, that is the same cost as travelling across the USA to a couple of big matches, and if I get to shoot in a couple of dozen matches it is a small price to pay and better than watching the game on TV, as there is no 1000 matches on TV,

Jeff

I invested in Shehane stock and was the worst mistake I ever made. Not only was the inlet so poorly done , would not stand behind the customer satisfaction statement on Web site charged me a restock fee 15% on a over charged stock from what I was quoted. Very expensive mistake for me.
