Getting gear to BSW in February

If flying out for the Berger SW Nationals what is best way to ensure gear gets there? Ship my ammo to someone already in Phoenix? Travel with ammo? what about rifle? Never flown with shooting gear
 
I was in the same situation traveling to Phoenix for Nationals last October. Had never traveled with a rifle before. Others here will give you excellent advice. If you PM me I can call you and give you the low down tomorrow, if you'd like. Just too much info to type. Drew
 
When I flew there I checked my rifle on the plane, had my spotter in my carry-on backpack, and shipped all of my ammo and other gear to the hotel I was staying at in a big locking pelican case. Shipping the gear was more of a hassle than flying with the rifle. No real problems with either.
 
I shipped gear to Nationals at Wisconsin this year in two small Pelican cases. Just don't exceed the 70lb limit for a single case and you'll be good. If you do exceed 70lb, all shipment guarantees with regards to arrival time go out the window. For the record, my two cases were 53lbs (ammo, various & sundry) and 69lbs (front rest/rear bag + misc) respectively and I had no issues.

You can't ship ammo via USPS so far as I know. FedEx is complete crap when it comes to consistent and reliable service. So that pretty much leaves UPS for this purpose, IMO.

I'd suggest traveling with your most expensive gear and shipping your ammo to your hotel. With regards to airline travel, it's important to keep everything under 50 lbs and 54" per package. Otherwise, you you may be charged expensive fees... not to mention packages over 50lbs become difficult for you and everyone else to haul around...that means they will be treated more roughly. Keep it below 54" for hassle free travel: i.e. Pelican 1750.

We break our rifles down, separating the stock from the barreled action, remove the trigger and bolt. This reduces the chance of stock damage. Strongly recommend using Kaizen foam which is layered firm foam that cushions and immobilizes your gear. You can custom carve the foam for a perfect fit: http://www.thepelicanstore.com/kaizen-1750-3pc-foam-set-1441.aspx We also use a Pelican box with Kaizen foam for the SEB rest and minigator bag (filled)...it comes it right under 50 lbs. :-) In short, get a container with foam that can withstand a drop and tumble....because it will be treated roughly at some point.

If you plan to travel a lot, then consider getting a rider with your home insurance for the full replacement value of your gear. It wasn't too expensive.

Most hotels will allow you to ship stuff to them in advance of your trip. You'll need to ship ammo since the airlines will only allow 11 lbs....not enough for several days of shooting. I always use FedEx and have never had problems. UPS is great too, would never trust the post office for anything I care about. Hope that helps.

Never shipped ammo... so, do we have to tell UPS or FEDEX that we are shipping ammo? Does it have any limitation on quantity, special container etc?

I bought one this past month so my impression is only an initial one:

The good- the longest rigid/sealed gun case with wheels I could find. It is thick enough to support a scoped rifle well. Has multiple sites for hasp locks. The latches lock solidly.

The not so good- Mine arrived with a damaged box and one wheel was completely missing. No other damage/ wheel assembly held on by a single sheet metal type screw. The case will only hold a single scoped rifle with a Robertson type stock (I anticipated this and only use on rifle per case anyway...just did not want anyone to be surprised). Not as rigid and positively sealed as a Pelican case.

I kept the case for $40 discount and have Plano sending me a new wheel assembly at no cost. My concern is that , fully loaded with a rifle, I can see the potential for losing another wheel but it could have just been shipped with an improperly seated screw perhaps... Bottom line is if Pelican made a case with 54" internal capacity, I would have bought it. The Plano is a not too distant second...fine for local use but I have some concerns for shipping it.

FWIW, If I fly to a match with my rifle I ALWAYS take the barreled action out of the stock. I have heard of too many stocks cracked/broken at the pistol grip. This happens when the luggage handlers flip the cases end over end. The whip action gets it. This also allows you to use a shorter case.
 
So assuming someone there could install my barrel. It's a Savage. But I would then have to take a barrel vise and the wrenches. Not sure how that would work in hotel room

Leave the barrel on the action, just take barreled action out of the stock. Take a torque wrench to reassemble.
 
I'm thinking a pelican 1720 should be enough. If taking barreled action out of stock. If I have room I'll take scope off too. Take my torque wrench to assemble it all once I get there
