Removed and Replaced Barreled Action

Last night I removed a barreled action from a bedded stock to clean the action area. My Borden action was getting sticky. Cleaned it with non-chlorinated brake cleaner. My question is do I need to check the zero on this gun before trusting it hunting? Never really thought about POI shift until had the action out. Very good glass and pillar bed job done on this rifle. Should I hunt with it tomorrow morning?

Did you have a specific torque setting when last sighted in ? What distance is the game shot at , usually ?

The gun was bedded by Tom Meredith. He put in a front block and rear pillar. I do not remember the original torque setting. There is not much crush room against these pillars. I tightened it very firmly against the pillars. The screw travel was done. Any more would have been abuse. My shots range from 100y to 500y. This is a .25-.3" rifle at 100y. I might be well served to hit the range before hunting with it again. Would hate to have screwed up and be off an inch or so at 100y.

I appreciate the answers. Thought the competition forum would be as good of a spot to ask as any other sub forum.

It would be even worse if you were off 6 or 8 inches and wounded the animal.

It probably won't change, but I wouldn't blow a shot because I didn't take the time to check the zero.

I've swapped my F-Class Pandas barreled actions between two (nearly) identical stocks several times and each time there was a slight POI changes. I'm talking about 1/2 inch at 100 yards. My guess is that you will see a change but it will be minimal, but you won't know until you test it. Even slight changes in torque will change the POI.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

I am taking my son hunting in the morning and will, if needed, shoot a different rifle. Was a bonehead move to pull the stock when had no time to go to the range. Live and learn.

It sounds like your rifle is solid enough to hold a decent zero. You haven't specified what you are hunting, coyotes, pigs, moose, elk or prairie dogs. The biggest factor with a rig like yours is removing/remounting the sights. If it is pillar bedded with a block and shooting in tight groups, you are probably good to go. if it is convenient, check it out.

Ouch and my .05, take it to the range. Miss a trophy and you'll be taking that one to bed for a loooong time.

Need to know the range at which you plan to take shots. Inside 200 yds, I'd say you're good.

It is your responsibility as an ethical hunter to verify your zero even if costs you a few hours of opening morning. To allow an animal to suffer because you don't have time to verify zero is neither ethical or good hunting manners. I would rather show up late knowing my rifle was dead on than spend hours of hand wringing looking for a wounded animal..
I would respect the man more that chooses the range over the luck chance....

The torque variation on a bedded Borden action in the absolutely worse case will make less difference at 200 yards than the inherent accuracy of a cheap rifle. Are you saying all hunters using cheap rifles are unethical?

BTW, "Tomorrow morning" has come and gone so hopefully CTK will post a photo of the 19 point buck he bagged.

Jerry,
It doesn't matter whether you shoot a $45k Rigby or a $150 pawn shop special it is your responsibility as an ethical hunter to verify your zero. I really don't care who's action and barrel you use. Are you really going to take the chance on something you believe or something you have proven?

So should you verify it every time you load it in the car? Every time you buy a new box of ammo? Every time you put it into and take it out of your rifle case?

The OP asked a question on whether what he did would influence the zero. It might in a 600 yd benchrest match but not within hunting accuracies. Just keep perspective. You wouldn't take a $200 rifle to a benchrest match so don't apply benchrest practices to the world of $200 rifles. --Jerry

I am not applying benchrest standards just hunting standards. 1-1/2" group is perfect for hunting as long as it is right at or slightly above POA.. Honestly if you can hit a paper plate at 100 yds your good in most situations.. But what if for some unknown reason your rifle shoots shots 6" left and 4" high after you removed it from the stock?
I have been hunting big game for almost 40 years and live where I can hunt big game three times a year. A gut shot animal is still and alway will be a gut shot animal.

In and out of the car or case absolutely not. New box of ammo yes... I have found POI differences in various lots..
I live where shots can be long and a bad zero can be hours of tracking for wounded game. I would rather change to a rifle with a known zero than one I may have thrown by removing it from the stock. I don't care what action you are using or how much it cost Mrs Murphy is a b***h and anything can happen.

I guess for me it is just an ethical thing.. Maybe not yours but you do as you wish... I have never wounded any game and any missed shots were because of me and not my equipment..
I hope that CTK has no issues and fills his tag..

I will always use a graphite pencil and mark a line across the screws and floor plate, goes back with the same torque, given that the screws were tight to begin with.

Sorry to start a disagreement. I took the rifle yesterday to back up my son. We were not looking at shots over 100y. My son almost took a shot at a very impressive 8pt. We were hunting on the ground and blew the deal getting the gun up. Buck was at 70y. I could have smoked it if rifle was off 3". It stopped at 150y and I did not take the shot or let him shoot. My son is shooting a savage Axis youth rifle. It will not win any fit and finish awards but is surprisingly accurate. I threw the scope it came with in the tub with his nerf guns and put one of my good scopes on it. It is shooting a hair over An inch at 100. It is a 7mm-08. I loaded 120 Ballistic Tips and 36gn h4895. Really a great setup. Getting 2650fps. He is primed and ready. I am going to range to check zero today and will report back.
