Is the 6 BR cartridge a Remington round? Different than Norma?

I'm confused a bit. I bought a used set of Redding 58317 dies that are advertised as 6BR dies, Midway just lists them as just 6BR. The sticker on the box says 6mm B.R. Remington. But isn't there also a 6mm Remington caliber? Then you see 6mm BR norma on the side of my Savage 6 BR barrel. What gives.

HUH???? No offense but a 6mm Remington is NOT the same cartridge as the 6mmbr (norma). The 6mm Remington is much longer than the 6mmbr casing.

Duh!!!
Reread the original post. Somehow I thought the OP was asking about the difference between the original Remington version of the BR and the Norma version. Mea Culpa.

Ok I read some of the links but I'm still confused as hell.

Here is a picture of the exact dies I bought.

I bought 200 pieces of Lapua brass and my Savage is 6BR Norma.

The same part number is still being sold on Midway and just says 6 BR. I would like to think if Redding changed die dimensions they would change part number but I really don't wanna waste a bunch of Lapua brass by using the wrong dies.

Ok I was also looking at Bruno's and all their Redding 6mm BR dies say 6mm BR Remington, that makes me feel a bit better.
There is a 6mm remington but that is a completely different animal. 6br Remington and 6br Norma are used interchangeably some these days to describe the same cartridge but most use the Norma dimensions. The die set you have will work fine for you.

fwiw & afaik,
The 6mm BR Remington WAS designed by a Remington employee by the name of Jim Stekl. The 6mm Remington is essentially a .257 Roberts necked down to 6mm Remington. Essentially a 7x57 Mauser case... They could not be more different.

Regards, Matt.

The difference between 6mm BR Remington and 6mm BR Norma is three fold.

1) Norma has slightly longer brass out of the box but both have the same trim length.
2)Remington has a lower max PSI rating compared to the Norma.
3)Finally the freebore in the Norma is almost a .25in longer to allow long bullets to be seated out past the donut.

What all of that means is a die for either one will. You bought the right dies. You may pass go and collect $200 ;)

I pulled a new Remington 6mmbr case from a new case of unmolested brass and 1 new case from a box of Lapua 6mmbr. The total length is 1.555 on both. The base diameter on the Remington above the groove is .462 and .465 on the Lapua. The diameter at the shoulder of the Remington is .454 and the Lapua is .457. I need to find some of my new Norma to check their dimensions.

I talked to Jimmy Stekl last week. Still in NY and doing fine.

I spent a lot of time on this same question and checked with Wilson and Whidden. As noted, there are differences in diameters, though slight. Wilson has new Dies that are more specifically for the now popular 6mmBR Norma as does Whidden.

My take: A 6mm Remington WAS actually a 244 Remington, made to compete against a 243 Winchester. It failed due to a twist in the barrel that would not shoot heavier bullets. It got a bad rep. Remington then took the exact same cartridge and renamed it 6mm Remington only changing the twist in the barrels that were stamped 6mm Rem. , to try to save the day.
The 6BR is a different cartridge. I think the correct name is 6BR Norma. The one thing for sure is if it has BR in the name, it is NOT a 6mmRem.
Some of the above is more or less correct.

There exists both:
6mmBR Remington - The original Wild Cat created by a Remington Employee and different then the 6mm Remington
and the Slightly Different
6mmBR Norma.
It is pretty much laid out on the Home Page under 6BR here on this site.
My 6mmBR Norma Reamer is different than the one that the Remington Custom Shop had for the 6mmBR Remington, but only slightly and then as pointed out it was mainly in the freebore for the longer heavier projectiles. I went back and forth on this with Dakota Arms (now the location of the Remington Custom Shop0 when they build my 6mmBR Norma.

Did you read my post? Your 6mm Remington and 244 Remington post is correct, but Remington made the 6mmBR also.
