those with 1-8, 1-9 twist, Could you email hornady and ask them to make a 50 gr. vmax or amax in 20 cal. I think it is our best chance with hornady.

thank you, Joel

I will do it. I built a 20 PPC with a 8.5 twist PAC-NOR barrel which loves the discontinued 50GR BERGERS and can not find any. I contacted BERGER with no help in finding any from them or their dealers. This gun is TOPS for long range P-dog shooting. THANKS for the idea in contacting them!!

I don't think its gonna happen, unless someone chambers a factory barrel with a fast enough twist to stabilize it. I've love to have a heavy vmax or something similar. Berger will, or at least used to, do special runs of bullets if you'd buy 100,000. There was a group buy for some .172 25gr target bullets a few years back on saubier.com. Didn't take too long to get the 100k.

I have wished for this for along time.I have talked to Sierra,Hornady and Nosler about this too.Look at all the choices guys have in .22 caliber.I am envious of all those choices,I mean every few grains another choice damn!
I believe our best bet is if Savage made a 9 twist 204 Ruger rifle the bullet companies would follow with a heavier poly tipped bullet.I think a 48~50 grain poly tipped 20 would be perfect, any heavier and you might as well go on up to a .22.I like the fact that Savage made a 9 twist .22-250,that took a lot of gumption,I mean nobody else in the business thought of that,a lot of guys did so with custom barrels on their own,but Savage went against the status quo with that move.I think back to when Todd Kindler faced these kind of issues and when we dreamed of .221 Fireball brass made by Lapua,we thought it was an impossible dream, but it happened.
You would think it would be easier for the bullet companies to take the first step, but I believe it's up to the gun makers.Remember the first step is the hardest part of any journey.Put me down for 10,000:)

I love the 39gr BKs, but dont know if id twist a barrel fast enough for 50s. I never liked the idea of twisting a barrel to the point where you limit your peak accuracy level to one or two bullets. I like the versatility of the 1 in 11" rate because I mainly shoot the 34gr Midsouth VN bullets which are really good out to about 300 yards.

For a little extra range, the 39gr BK's get the job done for anything out to maybe 500-600 yards. If I feel I want to go even longer for varmints, I'll go to one of my 6mm or 6.5mm rifles. All kinds of long range bullets available for them and I don't have to worry about hassling and hoping a company will make them for me. Even if a company besides Berger made a heavy 20 cal bullet, how available do you think they'd be? There wouldn't be a huge demand and production would be very limited and perhaps even cancelled at some point making it very frustrating if you found a pet load using that bullet.

Just my .02

Several years ago I pestered the VP of Marketing at Savage to legitimize the 17 Ackley Hornet (or some version of it). This was just after the model 40 had been released. He and I exchanged many emails. He eventually asked me for some loaded rounds. He was very interested in the concept but of course the lack of factory ammunition was a deal breaker. I suggested Hornady seemed to be the most receptive to launching a new varmint cartridge. Next I contacted Hornady and let them know that Savage was interested in the project. Each company liked the idea but wanted the other to be the first to jump but at least they were talking about it. At that point I pulled back and waited. A couple years later the 17 Hornady Hornet was released.

I'm not claiming to be "the" reason the cartridge appeared, but I do think I got a ball rolling. Want a fast twist 20 caliber made by a mainstream bullet manufacturer? They'll want production guns available to shoot those bullets. How bad do you want it?

In my experience the 50 grain bergers stabilized in and provided excellent accuracy in an 11 twist barrel. The poly tip may have a little more length so you might need a 10 twist but I don't feel that is over spinning them by any means.

I deleted my previous post for errors in the amount of bullets bought in the Saubier .17 caliber group buy. I searched the site and came up with this info. Roughly 24600 were requested and paid for. Minimum order was either 10,000 or 90,000 depending on certain variables. From the thread posted on 11/06/13

"This is the response I got from Berger regarding the 25gr target bullets."

Hi Bryant,

I apologize for the delay in response, I had to check with production for pricing and availability. They indicated to me that right now due to the market conditions and the massive amounts of backorders that it would be near impossible to schedule a custom run of bullets anytime soon. He indicated that to add this onto his schedule we would have to place you behind all existing backorders for designs we have, which would delay the production of this run for at least several months if not past a year. In order to produce these, we would have to order specially sized copper and lead as well, so we would require payment when the order is placed.

Since we require a minimum jacket run of 100,000, and 10,000 jackets would be used towards the bullets, this is a rough estimate:

10,000 Custom Bullets: $2900
+90,000 Custom Jackets: $8000
+shipping (roughly 128 lbs shipping from ZIP 92707)
+sales taxes if shipping within CA (8.75%)
Estimated Total: $10,900 + shipping and taxes

If you are still interested even with the delay on production, we can work up an exact cost with shipping and taxes included.

Thank you,

I know sierra talked about it a 2-3 years ago but nothing.
hornady has been up to a lot more things lately and I always like their prices.
I would love to have some sierra 50gr. blitzkings a whole bunch

I contacted berger. This is what they said.
Hello Aaron,

We can run this at 100,000 bullets and it would need to be prepaid up front, would take approx. 3 months and the price would be .318 each. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

$31.80 per 100 actually ain't too bad for a custom order. Tho still a little too steep for my taste in a varmint bullet.

And besides, Berger already makes a 55gr 20 cal varmint bullet. if you wanna go big for a 20 cal, might as well use what they already make and Bullets.com has the 55gr pills in Stock for $29.17 per 100.
