Cooper Model 21 17 Rem. and 25 gr. V-Max?

Has anyone shot 25 gr. V-Max bullets from their Cooper 17 Remington? I am thinking that Cooper may have 10 twist barrels as standard, and I am not sure if this is an issue for that bullet. Any comments/help?

Thanks,

Danny

Both my 17's have 9 twist but with that being said I have seen posts saying the 25 vmax needs a 9 twist barrel. My get away with a 10 twist shooting at altitude.

I think coopers might now be 10 twists in the 17.

A 25 vmax will probably work though. In cold weather you might be under stabilized.

I think that I was going to order a new Cooper 17 some years back and was bothered that they may offer 17s in 10 twist, and that it might have once been a 9 twist at one time, as Dave mentions. Mine is an earlier rifle, so, with any luck, mine is 9 twist. I will do the cleaning rod trick in a day or so, or maybe even make the email that Dave suggests.

I tried JBM Ballistics for twist based on calculations for plastic tipped bullets, and it considers 10 to supply marginal stability.

I have a Jackson game in the showcase at work (it's even on sale!....and a repeater!) I'll measure it up today and call cooper and see what twist it is.

Got a reply from Shirley and I was wrong. Their standard for 17 Remington is 1:10. Here ya' go:

Our standard is 1:10. If yours in 1:9 it must have been custom ordered that way and hopefully is stamped on the barrel. I can have one of the front office gals send you a catalog and spec book. It would have the twist in it. I don’t think it is on the website.

Dave,
Thanks for contacting Cooper. This is starting to explain what I noticed. I had loaded up some 25 gr. V-Max over IMR 4895. I got about 6 rounds down range. Unfortunately, I could not get more down range. I was using brass previously fired in either this Cooper, or my old Remington 700 BDL. the brass, even though it was fully sized, looked just ahead of the base like it was fired in an AR and would not even come close to fitting in the Cooper. I got lucky in that the first six rounds were fired in the Cooper. As I shot, I started to wonder where my rounds were going. I found them later on, inches off of point of aim. I looked at the impacts in the cardboard last night and noticed that they were not perfectly round. They were the slightest bit egg shaped, almost not detectable. While they were not keyholing wildly, evidently the twist was not perfect. As these were starting loads, low velocity was not helping matters. I suspect it would get better as the powder charge bumps up, but whether that will eliminate the problem, I will not know till further testing is done. I know that some people have posted about getting great accuracy with the 25 gr. V-Max through their Cooper, but it may end up that I have to go to the shorther Hornady 25gr. HP. I have a box here to start testing with.

I also called Cooper today and was told the same thing. 10 twist on the 17 rem

However using a patch and cleaning rod to measure I get a 9 twist.

I used the same rod to measure another seventeen that is for sure a 9 and verified it with the same rod. Both the Cooper and the other gun measured the same.

The Cooper isn't stamped as a 9.

I checked mine with a cleaning rod as well. I did it 4-5 times, and it comes out to be a 1:10 twist.
