6.5x284 in a short action?

Is anyone running a 6.5x284 in a short action? Just one of my random thoughts today.

I'm sure someone is but it isn't the best option. The 6.5x284 needs a LA to be able to optimize bullet seating depth, powder charge and feeding. It will not feed in a short action AICS mag.

Just finished up a 6.5-284 on a long action. My OAL with 140 Berger Hybrids is 3.137". 28" Bartlein Medium Palma contour.
Initial testing is showing pretty amazing groups....4 shots to get centered at 100 then 3 groups that averaged 0.218"...all this with no load development and a brand new barrel. I think if you want a short action 6.5 you'd be better suited with a 6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5 X 47L. In a repeater the 6.5-284 seated to fit a mag box would put you nearly same as those 2 at least with 140 class bullets. To reach full potential I think a long action is the way to go.

I'm running a.284 Shehane in a short action. It's only used as a single shot; not as a repeater.

I wouldnt use a SA unless I was using very short, light bullets, maybe for varminting. I would not use a SA if you wanna use 120-140s. for the reasons above.

And that is a positive recommendation?
The Remington Custom Shop has built the 40X on several "long action" rounds in the past. They include the 300 Win and 7 Rem Mags so a 300RUM on a 40X is not undoable. It is single shot only and, from experience with a friend's 40X 7Mag, the bolt has to come out to eject a live round.

No it is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. A rifle can be built on a custom action for less money than the custom shop gun and be a repeating rifle that will cycle a live cartridge. I cant believe anybody could be so uninformed as to pay for this kind of crap.

I just got back home from a two week "road trip" from Idaho to Milwaukee and back. A few miles north is Bartlein. I sent them an OM 70 to be fit with a 32" 6.5-284 a couple months ago, and picked it up. I can seat the 140gr Berger Hybrid out to 3.35" in that box, and it feeds every round. That extra length gets me close, in initial testing, to 3000fps.

I have a 6.5x284 short action Rem 700 hunting rifle. A long action would have been better and I have considered putting the barrel on a long but what I have shoots really well. I shoot only 140 grain Nosler Partitions and have to seat um deep to function from the mag.
I don't shoot long range so the velocity loss does not have much effect.

I would only recommend a long action for long range use with heavy bullets.

+1..... I have 2 of them. Both single shots. 1 on a long action and 1 on a short action. As this man said, you have to take the bolt out to take a loaded round out which makes it a pain, to some degree. I use the short action gun for groundhog hunting, so it's no big deal. I don't load unless I see a groundhog and if I don't get the opportunity to shoot, I just open the bolt or take the bolt out.

My first one was built on a S/A because i had the action laying around and also built it as a groundhog gun. It was set up to take advantage of heavy bullets set above the doughnut with a single shot follower, as stated the bolt has to come out to remove a live cartridge. It's not ideal but you can work with it if you have to, just know what you're getting into, it is what it is.

I have a Remington XP-100 (short action) in 6.5x284. She is a shooter. If I close the bolt on a live round, I do have to remove the bolt to get the live round back out. I have a handy dandy bolt release so it takes just seconds to remove it. Fired brass flies out no problem. Since this is a single shot, I don't worry about magazine length. Bullet seating depth is 100% controlled by how we finish reamed the chamber. It is doable and if you recognize the constraints ahead of time, it can be a wonderful build.

I'm thinking it's pretty much a toss up. Depends on the use of the cartridge. IF it's going to be a 1000 yard gun for matches, absolutely build it on a long action with a yard long barrel. How about if it's just gonna be a woods gun for deer or a 500 yard max set up ? No need to load 3.35 inch rounds. I'd say a 2.80 round from a short action will do anything a 260 will do. Sure then why use the 6.5-284? Just a matter of preference maybe. Many 284s out there on short actions for hunting or tactical match use. Long actions really shine in the 284 but it's a fantastic short action gun too. One thing is you'll never get factory ammo just anywhere. The 260, you will just as the creedmore is all over shelves. Just a matter of choice really. IMO.

That's always an option. Not a real convenient one but an option.
