Bat Action recommendation for 338 Lapua?

Hi Everybody-- I did not want to hijack James thread so I started this one. I was just looking at the Bat Chart and from what I see they make three actions with .338 LM bolt face. They are the M,L,HR. I'm trying to decide which one to get for a .338 LM bench rifle to shoot long range but not competition. Can anyone provide any info about experiences with these actions and .338 LM? Also what actions do the military use for their .338 LM Rifles. Thank You all for your support. Hoz

I use a defiance machine devient action on my 338 lapua. I just looked at the bat actions. Id go HR all the way and not look back, of course in whichever configuration you want. The interal recoil lug up front nice as it extends the tenon qhere you can put more meat of the barrel on the action.. little stronger hold. And it has the rail on it too. No brianer for me. Id do 20 or 40 moa rail when i orderes it if possible.

Not many are using the Lapua in the military right now. Those that do are using a Remington MSR. They, SOCOM, are moving to the 300 Norma in the next rifle which will be fielded by more units than just the Tier 1 groups.

BAT HR and M are great. Stiller, Defiance, Savage, even Surgeon makes them. Can't go wrong with any of them. I do think a 700 opened up to shoot that caliber is not a good idea.

Thanks Sniper. That HR action is pretty much a R700 footprint except the loading port is a little longer and I was thinking of something a little beefier. I did not think about tenon that is good info. I'll look at that defiance action and I will look at that bat HR again. Thanks

Thanks for that info Dave. It makes sense the military would go with a 30 caliber.

Thanks X ring. I will look at them all except savage. I agree with you on not using a R700. That is why I'm looking into the customs

Yes. Straight 1.350 x 32 inches long. No taper. Krieger 5R. I shoot a 338 BA suppressor on to boot. Very long. It has 8 pounds of lead built into Tooley MBR stock as well. Weight is 31 pounds. I just use it to shoot steel at a mile with friends. Scott

Sounds like a very nice rifle. Thanks

Dang a 1.35 straight!

Mines 32 inch kreiger, custom contour of 1.35 to match the OD of the action for 8 inches, then kind of heavy varmint tapers down to 1 inch at the muzzle
I am thinking about that bat HR. It would be nice to just modify a R700 inlet stock a little. How much velocity increase do you suppose you get with 32" versus say 26"?

Greg at Bugholes recently finish my 338LM base on a Stiller TAC338 action. It uses ,the CIP standard and throated to run Berger 300gr OTM at mag length. It wears a Bartlein 30" finished length MTU profile 5R barrel. The thing shoots amazing and between the Bore Rider chamber and the Fat Bastard brake, it has less recoil then a 308. The action is .465 longer and .050 larger in diameter then Remington's actions.

Thank You for that info. Sounds like a great rifle you've got there. I will check into that TAC 338 action.

Thanks! I sent a lot of time researching the 338 and the different version. What help most was getting my own reamer. It allowed me to load the Berger OTM 300gr and touch the lands, while still having .040 space in my CIP length.

To use the 300gr Bergers a lot of guy end up single feeding them, or having a .050 or more jump if they load to mag length. The friend that I shoot is load .065 longer then I am with the same bullet. I don't have any over pressure signs so it was a good balance. Good on your build.

OK. Those 300 grainers interest me the most to . I'll be getting a reamer anyway so I'll look into getting a custom one. Thanks for the additional info.
