I bought one recently and add me to the list of not impressed. I shot a string of shots and let the barrel get hot on a very heavy barrel tactical rifle (MTU contour 28"). After the barrel got out the device in and timed it for 2 min then 3 then 5. So it ran for a total of 5 minutes and the barrel was still too hot to touch. I noted very little improvement over ambient but this was on a warm day so the delta between barrel temp and ambient was not so high. Maybe on a cool day with cooler air down the barrel it will be better.
I think it needs a LOT more CFM of air. Not like 2-3X but more like 10X-20X more CFMs to make a difference.
Short of using a big blower or some other cooling method like H20 or a steady stream of compressed air, it
is asking a lot of any device to cool a barrel in 5 minutes and some would argue that rapid cooling like that may not be the best thing to do for a barrel. We have multiple shooters using BarrelCool for F-Class style matches, including myself, and we cool thick 1.25" diameter barrels from too hot to touch to near ambient between relays, which is often as little as 30 minutes.
Was the barrel exposed to direct sunlight? We have noted on many occasions that a barrel in the sun will keep the outside barrel warm/hot, making it appear that BarrelCool is not doing as intended. If my gun is in the sun, I simply put a cover (towel) over the rifle so the sun is not directly beating down on the rifle.
I would also like to note that once you are done firing, the barrel heat is still migrating from the inside bore to the outside of the barrel, so in reality, after you shoot, the outside barrel temp after 2-3 minutes could actually be increasing.
The testing we have done is to get the barrel above 140 degrees, let it stabilize and then start the time once it crosses the 140 degree mark. This is a much more controlled way of testing. In multiple control testing experiments, we have noted times cut in half. If you look at the graph below, which is testing done with a 32", 1.25" straight contour 7mm barrel, the cooling in the first 5 minutes is better than ambient, but it really starts to separate itself as it gets to around 6+ minutes. At the 10 minute mark, a barrel with BarrelCool is around 1005-107 degrees, which is the same as the ambient barrel at the 18-20 minute mark. In my real world testing, nearly any barrel will be cool
The big challenge we had when designing BarrelCool is how to keep the battery life relatively high, keep it small and compact (in the shape of a chamber flag), fit both an AR and bolt action platform, but still be capable of cooling a barrel in a reasonable amount of time. We tested over 10 fans/blowers, and over 5 different battery types and I believe we have the best cooler out there for the size, battery life, portability, and functionality (cooler and chamber flag).
