6mm Super Lr/ super x loads

My new 6SLR is in the mail even as we speak. MacLennon 8 twist 28 inch stainless barrel. Bought my own PT&G reamer throated for 107 SMK. Will also be trying 105 Scenar and 105 AMax. Later on 90 SMK and 90 Scenar.

Can buy Lapua .243 brass at a good price from a Toronto supplier so bought 200.

Am going to try Supreme 780 with the heavy bullets and H4350 with the lighter bullets. Will start a new thread with a range report once I get going.

Just barely have time to load and sight in at 300 metres before a 3 day F Class match in Ottawa next weekend - long weekend in Canada.

The role for my 6SLR this year is short range, 300, 500, 600. My new 6.5AI will start at 600 and go out to 800, 900, 1000. The overlap depends on the squadding for any given day.

Will have to calculate come-ups at 500/600 for the 6SLR during the matches but I don`t anticipate any problems at those short ranges. Have had 600/1000 practises with the 6.5AI so no problem there.

I just chambered up my 6SLR barrel, Bartlien 5R 1:8 for 105-108 bullets. I should start playing with loads next month. We'll see how it goes.

Mike Thats what i'm using and it really likes the the DTAC115's. I never even tried anything other bullet cause it shoots small, very small.....jim

Your stabilizing 115's out of a 1:8 at 1,000? That's good news (I think). My smith has used my 0.095"FB reamer in his 1:7.5 barrel with 115's and he's happy with it.

I made the descion to go 105's when I was using Litz's numbers on JBM and found the increase in BC of 115's small compared to the increase in weight. What matters is what shoots good though.

I really like my 6SLR as this is the second caliber I shoot that is a Whitley creation the other being a 6mm AR Turbo Improved.
I have a couple of "great" loads one being 44 grains of H4831sc for the Berger 108 Bt., 46 grains of H4831sc for the 107 SMK, and as of right now 39.5 grains of RL 17 for the 105 AMAX all using WW brass and Fed. Gold Match primers all this being shot out of a 30" Bartlein 5R 1:7.5 barrel. All of these loads are basically one hole affairs but will be testing more loads.

Any new slr data?

I have been trying some loads out of my 27" rock creek 1:7.5 the other day i ran dtac's about .005" off the lands up to 44 grains of h4831sc and no pressure. Only tested speed at 41.5 and 43 and at 43 i was at 2726fps, loaded up some more ww brass, cci200, h4831sc,new dtacs up to 48 grains, see where this pressure is and where the velocity is. Everything i have shot has been tight, just slow.

Any suggestions?

This is a very old thread you resurrected. Ive had pretty good results with 7828ssc, around 100fps faster than 4831 with no huge pressure. Recently tried RL 26. jury's still out.... very fast but did not work up a great group yet.

good luck

I knew it was old, but was hoping there might be enough interested and using the 6 slr to add info to it. I have searched for more info and find little bits here and there.

Once i get some loads that are great i will post them up on here, i am guessing i have a pretty slow barrel compared to what i have been seeing.

Just read an article today anout rl 17 giving the 6xc good velocities, wonder how temp sensitive it is.

Everything I've heard or read says RL17 is too temperature sensitive for most competition applications. As always YMMV.

The standards for the 6SLR are pretty much the same powders that work in a 243, they are pretty close to the same capacity. I've tried 107s and 105s and gotten good velocities with 7828SSC and N160. People have also reported good results with H4831.

I tried H1000 but found it to be too slow, couldn't get the velocity I was looking for. I got good loads with both N160 and 7828SSC loaded with 105/107s. From memory, my loads with the 107SMK and the 105 Hunting VLD are both in the range of 3100 to 3200 FPS. I think I could have gone a bit faster, but I got an accurate load in that range and called it good.

My reamer has .078 FB (less freebore than I would want if I were spec'ing it again. )

We tried it a few years ago in my SLR and my buddy's 6XC. Cant speak of temp sensitivity, but definitely got pressure ... no extra speed...went back to 4831 and 4350(him). Got a fair bit of 4831 getting old since I found 7828. I didn't have much success with H1000 either, but that was one barrel ago.

I don't have my workup, but my load with 105 Hunting VLDs is 46.1gr 7828ssc getting 3075 from a 24" barrel. I could probably get a little more, but it shot well there so I stopped.

I never tried 4831 so I can't help there.

So the 7828 is what you are running now? How does it compare to 4831sc? I know it is a slower powder.
I run 4831 at 3030 fps with very nice accuracy. I now run 7828 at 3125 with great accuracy. Three different actions and barrels. The new 26" has a .236 bore and seems to show a slight bit o pressure at 3125...very warm days. The other two 28" barrels show no pressure at all. I have taken both powders to just over 3200 fps, but backed em down for accuracy.

I may have to pick some of that up and try it. Can you give me an idea of load weight ranges or a start from idea?

With hunting season so near i will be doing less with this rifle, but want to get a great load going in it.

If you are talking abouit 7828ssc see my post below.

If you are talking about 4831 search the forum for the thread I started when I built my rifle. I think there was a lot of load data posted on that thread.

More discussion, less load data:

Thanks xtr, i think i have 4831sc topped out or near it without having to trash the brass. I am looking at alternatives that may get me some more velocity than 2950fps in a 27" barrel with less pressure on the brass.

I will look at the 4831 thread you posted some more, but i am at 45.8 now with 2950 to 2975 fps have yet to re shoot the load over chrono and that is with the dtac
