22br 80gr

Hi everyone.
I'm making my way towards a 22br.
I want to shoot 80,s I was going to use a 1:8 twist as that's what my 223 has and it seems to shoot them good.
But iv looked at twist rate calculators saying while the projectile might be stable its only just, and may be a little short on b.c because of it.
So I thought maybe others might like to share what there using?

Also as far as reamers if heard as little as .050 freebore can leave the projectile as little as just 1/3 into the case neck, and another with no specs but I'm guessing he has zero freebore, with the projectile sitting just below the neck/shoulder junction. But claims I shouldn't run out of powder room, and this gives me some room to chase the lands. Which sounds OK.
But I'm having trouble finding a reamer. Iv only seen .0100 freebore at ptg.
So also... Do you have a recommended reamer and where to buy. I'm thinking tight neck about .252 as my brass seems to true up at about .012.

Any recommendations to what your using and where I might find a reamer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

My 22BR with a 8-twist, the freebore measures to be 0.080" and it shoots the 75grn A-Max bullets very well.

I emailed PTG and was told the following:
Sir;
PTG Reamer Part# P5666403
.2515 nk and .080 fb 1°30 should work fine

Thanks,

I also emailed Cymer about the headspace for a 22BR reamer for 75gnr A-Max bullets, here is their reply:

Subject: RE: Chamber finish reamer for 22BR Norma/Lapua to shoot 75 grain A-Max Hornady Bullets

Sir,
The 22 BR Norma we have a print for has .049 of lead length at .2242….with that throat it would place the .222 throat datum in the chamber at 1.6699” from bolt face.

(.222 is the diameter that your projectile would first impact the 1 degree 30 minute throat in the chamber) If you take a length measurement of your cartridge from the head of the cartridge to the .222 bullet datum diameter that will tell you how far off or into the lands your bullet would be.

Sincerely,

The reamer grinders will cut any freebore you want, as long as you know what to ask for, don`t concern yourself with what is listed in a catalog.

I shoot the 75 in an 8 twist 22 Dasher, so the 80 in a 22 BR isn`t a stretch.

Phil.

Thank you.
I will do some measuring as discribed by clymer.
I probably don't know enough to spec my own reamer, and be confident of getting it right.

Talk with the reamer manufacturer of your choice.

Ask them what they recommend, they do this kind of thing for a living, they probably have a good grasp on it.....;)

Thanks for the replies
I have done the measuring that clymer has mentioned above. My take on it is, measure the point on the projectile where the size is 222 and then from this point and the bolt face/case head use the other measurement 1.6699 and get them to line up.
Which seems about what I want.... The boat tail/shank junction to line up with the case neck/shoulder junction. Which should be touching the lands.
I have also emailed to see what they recommend and hope to see there neck size.

Again, thanks.

P J Brown;
I measured my Cooper 22BR free bore after receiving Clymer's email, with a .222" diameter gage that I made for my Stoney Point/Hornady comparator to measure the to the .222" bullet datum to

P J Brown;
After receiving Clymer's email, for my Stoney Point/Hornady comparator I made a .222" insert to check the free bore measurement on my Cooper 22BR. I made it from brass material so I wouldn't get it mixed up with my other bullet diameter inserts.
In one of Bryan Litz books he shows a drawing of the 75gn A-Max bullet with the overall length of 1.110" and another drawing of the 80gn A-Max with the overall length of 1.162", the Ogive Radius are very close to being the same on both bullets.
