another disappointing year at NRA Nationsls

I've been shooting at Camp Perry for the NRA nationals for 10 years. Why is it every year their is less and less? 2 weeks of shooting left and commercial row is a ghost town????
The NRA often has social events planned in the evenings for the competitors..... Except the long range people, who compete for some of the oldest and certainly the most prestigious trophies, are treated like the step children nobody wants.
Why is this and why does our governing body do this?

Silver Eagle,
I frankly don't know all the answers, but what comes to mind a first $$ and second I believe there is a changing of the guard, even at Camp Perry. It strikes me that the newer generation comes from a completely different mold and their value structure simply isn't the same. So many of them don't have either the finances or even the goal of a passing generation or even value what many of us held as sacred. Its not that they're not thankful or some don't hold the same passion. Its the shear numbers aren't as driven or enthusiastic about competitive shooting. Look at the simple views of guns in general within our society. When I was a kid, we loved going out rabbit hunting or simply learning how to shoot better. Guns in general weren't thought of as bad, rather necessary. Now, GUNS KILL PEOPLE (not people) and gun owners are thought of (by many in our society) as "gun nuts" and radicals who need to be contained. Hence our society is teaching youngsters that guns are bad and many simply don't have the interest many of us, do. I may be all wet, but people want to go plink, hit gongs and are happy with that.

Simply, diminishing interest equals diminishing turnout and less respect for those who do. I so wish I were wrong. But money and POLITICS drives so much of an agenda. The Dems will say, GUNS are a bad thing and we must regulate them MORE to stop the horrible killing of innocents. They seek an answer to a serious problem and haven't a clue on how to answer it. But to do nothing is not an answer to them. So WE get to pay the price of their ignorance, stupidity and liberalism.

Alex

PS. Sorry if that sounded like I was ranting.

Don't really have to try to change people, simply easier to change their children.

And that is EXACTLY what our wonderful educational systems in doing to them at school. Rather than teaching them the ABC's, they are being taught liberal social values. Even the world of competition (that we grew up in-hence we have fun competing at a shoot), doesn't have the same emphasis...ie. the Bernie Sanders approach...give them everything and they'll simply fall in line and show up with their hands out..i.e. free education, free health care, free who knows what. But you have to let them work to earn a wage to pay for a few things so the rich can get richer, meanwhile the poor or the middle class marched in place, but keep their dignity as working to put food on their tables for their families. That's part of the psychology that gets compliance without much effort. Isn't it scary to think that Bernie would have been worse than Hillary??? Imagine that!

A scant few years ago, it was 2008 or 09, the NRA held a movie night on base and a full BBQ for the crouse the corse and service rifle shooters, long range people show up 2 days latter, we're lucky we got target backers to paste our targets to....
I agree the political climate Is against us. Butt even before King Obama got into office, the "after shooting hours" social events were one sided.

Take responsibility...homeschool

It's sad seeing the generational explanation for the low turn out at the nationals, but only because I know it to be so true. It's my generation that has their heads in the sand. I don't get it but it's true. Most of my friends are gun owners, some are even "enthusiasts", but none have the drive, passion, or respect for precision shooting in any capacity. Its not just that, they lack the patience, and motivation to strive for their best. Doing it the "right way" doesn't matter anymore. No one cares about history so they never read about all of the greatest shooters, shots made, and rifles built. They aren't inspired. The gratification of doing something by hand doesn't mean as much anymore. I hear a lot of "I don't have the time" or "I wish I had the time" or "wish I had the money". Its nonsense. If you had the passion, you'd find the time, and the money. I don't even know if they can see that its their priorities in the way, not time and money, and I think they actually believe it.
I'm saying this as a 29yr old guy, 30 next month, and it's amazing how much time and money I seem to find to devote to the things I WANT to do. Maybe I just have more time in my day than the rest of my generation. Its these observations that have served as the driving force behind my passion for things that I see slipping away, not being passed down, and not being sought after. It's because of this that I have kind of made it my personal goal to not only learn some of these lost trades, and techniques, but to also pass them down. The only problem is...I can't seem to find anyone who cares. No kids myself, but from what I see, unless it has a big screen that beeps and rings it would be hard to steal their attention. I guess my girlfriends 7 yr old daughter does like to help me clean cases, but the 13 yr old...forget it.
So this is actually one of the reasons why I reload, have a passion for precision rifles and personal excellence, and get out there as much as I possibly can. Crack jokes all you want but I do all of my reloading with hand tools, however I do use a digital scale. My brass holder is chucked up in my Miller Falls 1900's hand drill that I restored, and I use it for all length trimming, chamfering, and deburring. Think that's bad? I also do a lot of woodworking but again, only use hand tools. All saws that I use are traditional Japanese hand saws, hand planes, etc. No nails, or screws, all joinery. Dovetails, finger joints, tennons, all cut by hand. Its hard, but rewarding.
My last middle finger to todays ways is music. I grew up playing guitar. Clapton, Stevie Ray, zeppelin, the electric guitar classics. I saw the trend early on with Nirvana and the 90's. They weren't even trying to be good, or get better. It defied all that being a guitar player was all about but that's the way it was going. So I dove in deep and started playing the hardest thing I could all the time. Clapton led to Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai, and they led me to the classical guitar. I set out for the most exacting, purist form of music that I could find which led me to study Andres Segovia. Once I found it, the others seemed cheap and insignificant. So now that's all I play. And although it is somewhat difficult finding time to study Bach and the classical masters, hand cut dovetail joints, reload, and be out on the long range on the weekends, it makes me wonder...
How is it that 90% of gun owners that I come into contact with don't know what a minute of angle really is? No time, no care.
Most have such a sensitive ego that they cant even be taught! They want to know but cant bring themselves to coming to terms with the fact that they don't already know! Drives me nuts. Nothing better than being in the presence of someone better than yourself and being able to absorb the collective knowledge of their past experiences.
Sorry for the rant, but what was said above about this generation really gets me, obviously. Of course, I'd rather they learn a thing or two about the history of their own country before anything else but they wont do that either so, I'm done. Jesse

Before you throw all the blame at the NRA, keep in mind that the CMP is the major player at Camp Perry and has had a dramatic effect on all disciplines that were once NRA and DCM.

I don't see it as totally a result of guns are bad as much as it is the result of the gongs and explosive targets are funner. The firearms business and ammunition business have never been better. People today want to play games, whether it's with a firearm or a smart phone.

The generational thing and overall change to our culture are definitely factors, but some of you may be looking a little too deep for answers about declining attendance at Camp Perry. I think an even bigger factor is that the NRA can not run a good match. I have been to Perry for the last 7 years, but did not go this year. It's a 12-hour drive, costs a lot of money, is poorly run, slow, and doesn't involve a lot of actual shooting. The NRA acts like they are doing everyone a favor by having the matches at all. LR phase is only 40 shots per day. I'll probably go back again someday, as it is the "National Championships", but for now, there are better "big" matches for me to use up my vacation time on. Berger SWN and Midwest Palma come to mind.

Toltom is right on the money. We muse start with our kids. My two cents.. Tommy..

My girlfriends 13 yr old daughter is home schooled, or technically online schooled. She has a curriculum supplied by a teacher online. Its the dumbest thing i have ever seen. I'm sure it is better than the trash they pick up in public school but it';s certainly not what i would call a good education. I wont go into it but she can submit an answer to a test and get the correct answer wrong because she didn't type "the" in front of her answer! The accepted answers are inputted by the teacher apparently so if you choose a correct answer with a different variation of wording it will be wrong. Then she has to write an email to the teacher explaining what happened...its a freakin circus. Between that, common core, and the liberal BS they are pushing, I wouldn't be surprised if an otherwise straight A student comes out dumber than a box of rocks. Absurd ways to solve simple math, no cursive writing, no emphasis on grammatical errors, and an emphasis on everything that doesn't matter. The only other option is traditional home schooling, which if you are able to stay home all day, why not? For the rest of us that have to work all day, mom and dad, with good jobs just to pay the insane bills its not so much an option. I make pretty good money for a young guy and there's no way i could support everyone, which would be necessary for home schooling. The little one goes to a Private Christian school that doesn't teach common core or the other BS but it is expensive. However, in my area in Florida, they do have a number of precision air rifle teams in public schools! They even compete! My Buddy is on the National Marines Air rifle team (don't think thats the actual name for it), and he gets to train his little sister that is on her high school team.

Like shooting matches, public schools, and private schools, each online offering is an entity to itself. Don't dismiss homeschooling because an online offering stinks. Last year my daughter took "Introduction to the Shooting Sports", a course designed and taught by a NYS certified firearms instructor,(me) which covered the basics such as safety, ethics, morality, and went on to introduce her to rimfires, centerfires, BR, tactical rifle, long range shooting, shotguns, advanced reloading, deer and squirrel hunting, field dressing, varmint hunting, cooking game. Her final exam was a PD hunt in OK. She did fine and I documented it all with the liberal school district here in NY, just to irritate them. She got an elective full year credit for it. See that...some schools still have shooting in the curriculum! ;)

So, how'd she do at Camp Perry?
