Crosshair disappearing. What to do.

One of my Nightforce BR's has the NP-2DD reticle. The other has a CR-2 or something like that. That darn crosshair based one does the same thing for me. I adjust and adjust and then adjust some more. Never really lose it but it does seem to fade in and out.

The NP2-DD is always bright and clear. Been thinking of selling the CR one and /or trading on another NP2-DD. My old eyes struggle with that fine crosshair but see that center dot perfectly all the time.

Beats me.

I can open both eyes and the crosshair comes back but blurs the target, close one and crosshair disappears.

What you describe are two separate issues.

With both eyes open and the crosshair is clear but the target isn't you have a focus problem you need to fix. The link above referencing "Paul" will tell you how to do that. "Paul" knows his stuff and if he was still with us he'd tell you the problem can only be fixed by properly adjusting the eyepiece then never touch it again.

The ability to see the reticle when both eyes are open but not when your non-shooting eye is closed happens to all of us to some degree. It's usually more pronounced on bright sunny days. When you close your non-shooting eye your brain thinks it's getting dark and both pupils open wider. When this happens the shooting eye loses much of its focus capability (depth of field) in the same way opening a camera lens to maximum aperture makes focus much more critical. It's much to your advantage to learn to shoot with both eyes open. If your shooting eye is also your dominant eye this is fairly simple. I learned to do it by putting a piece of thin tissue paper over the left lens of my shooting glasses and leaving both eyes open. The tissue lets the light through but there's nothing to see. It doesn't take long to learn to ignore whatever your non-shooting eye is seeing. But you need to fix the focus/parallax problem first.

At 55yrs old i was told i have cataracts in both eyes. Left one was starting to give me problems and right one seemed fine. 1yr later i had a new lense in my left eye. (*forward 2yrs) Was to the state DMV Fri. and my right eye ( scope eye ) just barely passed. NF Comp CH seems OK but it's off to the VA this morning to make arrangements for the right eye to be done.......This can happen to anyone at any age. The clarity in my left eye is amazing. Can't wait to get the right one done and over with.........Get a check up.

There's an important detail about adjusting the ocular. Start with it all the way out, and slowly screw it in until the reticle is sharp - *and no further*. If you keep screwing in, the reticle will still appear sharp, but only because your eyes are working to keep it that way.

With a properly adjusted scope, you don't have to. Both images are focused on the same point in the scope and they are both perfectly sharp. It's not like iron sights...
Even with my iron sights, I slip in the AOS and all three target, front and rear are in focus.

Bill, please get your eyes checked soon. If you or anyone else needs some motivation, google
Macular Hole. Pretty sure you'll be making an appt. before you're done reading. Take care Paul.

Before you start to adjust the reticle focus, turn the parallax adjustment to infinity, AND turn the scope to the highest magnification.
NOW start with the ocular all the way out and take a QUICK look. Turn the ocular IN a bit, take a QUICK look, and repeat these steps until it is in focus.

Put a boost on it . Sure worked for me.

Im going to get my eyes checked as it's been a while. Thanks for all the help with adjusting the scope as I've had really no problems in the past at all using optics till now. Lots of good info from everyone.

Shooting today and my crosshair keeps disappearing. I can adjust parallax to see crosshair or target clean but not both. Never had this happen before. Crosshair just fades out. Very frustrating. Anyone else had this and know what to do or are my eyes finally jacked up?

Thanks

Bill
Bill,
Get your eyes checked. Adjust the eye piece and parallax per the instructions that came with the scope. And start doing cardio work outs. The human eye is an oxygen hog ! You only have so long looking through a scope or iron sights before you get the issue you are asking about here. Cardio will help you process oxygen better so you can stay on the sights longer. This dosen't prevent this problem from happening though. You will have to look away from the scope or sights ( at the grass preferably as green is a relaxing color for the eye} and breathe to get your blood oxygenated again. It also helps to remember to breathe while your on the sights , slowly. I know I find myself holding my breath at times and poof! the target and the sights disappear! So start walking, riding a bike, swimming etc and this will help immensely.
In most cases the issues we have in shooting are with the "loose nut behind the butt plate" . And not the load, bullet or equipment.
