Need some info 6.5x47L

Question. Going to be ordering a reamer for the 6.5x47L what freebore should I use for 142 berger, and what freebore for the 130 berger. thanks John

My gunsmith said that he chambers all of them @ .172" regardless of planned use. Not sure if this is the perfect plan but he is a good gunsmith. I did not have any basis to dispute this idea and have a .172" freebore on mine. It shoots great with 130 VLD's.

Thanks to everyone, looks like I have a good starting point.
John

Sir,
Interested to hear what specs you settle on and then later how it turns out.
6.5x47L will be my next build.
(Many are quick to offer what they use and like, but rarely do they report back with the usable bearing surface in the neck at final load spec. If they did, we could offer new shooters/reamer purchasers a better answer to what is a very reasonable, predictable question.)

Which of the three 130s are you referencing?

Based on Berger's online specs, I computed ((base to ogive) - (boat tail)) as a method for comparing the different bullets. I've read nearly every 47L freebore related post and seen answers to your question (and mine) all over the map without any baseline of minimum bearing surface in the neck. Some place the 130 and 140 +/- 0.050" apart. That looks good for the Hunting and Tactical 130, but not the target bullet. Again, any practical experience with your build would be universally appreciated.

130 VLD-H: 0.430
130 AR-HYB: 0.435
140 BT: 0.443
140 HYB: 0.480
140 VLD-T: 0.486
140 VLD-H: 0.493
130 VLD-T: 0.496
120 BT: 0.523

I have one that started out .110 freebore and it shoots the 130hunting vlds great.I am sending off some components to LRI to have a prs rifle built for my son and will do the .123 freebore and let him burn up the 1000 123 scenars and 8 lbs. of Rl-15 that's been in the closet for the last year.

For the 123 Scenars be careful of only a .135 freebore. ALL Lapua Scenars have extremely long bearing surfaces for the caliber / bullet weight! The 123's are no different. I would go to a .160 freebore the Scenars. They have a LONG bearing surface!

3 barrels all chambered by the same guy with the same reamer. PTG .123" freebore. all cut rifled 4 groove barrels. Using my hornady (stony point) tool, modified case, comparator & ham fisted "touch". berger 140 Hybrids measure like this...

Brand new, unfired barrel CBTO at hard touch= 2.104", COAL = 2.783"

Barrel with 81 rounds on it (broken in only) = 2.108" & 2.787"

Barrel with 800 rounds on it = 2.140" & 2.819". This is a 28" tube that likes about 39gr of H4350. 2,750 FPS. I can fit about 40gr, but groups open up.

On a new chamber, the heel is at the body shoulder junction. The pressure ring area is real close to the donut. It will burn in, but if you want to shoot 140s from the get go and have boiler room to get respectable velocity, i'd go .160" or so FB. I sold this reamer once i got a a 6br. I want more V out of the 47 now...

Rehashing this thread. I am about to have a barrel chambered in 6.5x47 for long range BR. It is a 1.25 straight Bartlien 5R in 8 twist and was wondering about the freebore. My GS has the PTG version from Bullets.com and it is .167 freebore if I read the print correctly. I envision shooting the Berger 130 (VLD and/or AR-Hybrid). Will I be able to get the 130 VLD to touch the lands (if needed) going with that reamer?
I don't really want bullets to go any deeper in the case than just above the juncture of neck/shoulder and plan on using all the powder capacity. Should I even worry about long v. short freebore?

shoot4fun,

To answer your questions;
yes and it depends.

Kelbly's chambers mine with a .163" freebore, JGS reamer and it works well with all 120-140gn bullets that I have used. On my hunting rigs, I seat 140gn Hybrids well into the lands and feed them from an extended length magazine box (short action, Atlas' with Wyatt boxes) and the bearing surface/boat tail juncture stays in the neck and still would with a fair amount of jump. I wouldn't go with any shorter freebore, especially in a LR BR rifle and probably longer, as Erik Cortina suggested, would be better so you maintain your capacity in the boiler room and stay away from a potential donut, even if you end up jumping your bullets a considerable amount. By the time the throat erodes enough that you can't get a grip on the bullet with the case neck, I expect your barrel's BR accuracy will likely be a distant but excellent memory....Just my opinion.

This has me concerned. I'm having a 6.5 x 47 built using an HS precision dbm. My barrel has been chambered with the PTG reamer with the .167 freebore. I know the max oal for a loaded cartridge in the HS mag is 2.838. I'm wondering if I'll be able to seat out to the lands if necessary and still fit in the confines of the magazine. I have Lapua Scenars in 123 and 139 grain, Berger 130 tact. hybrids and 140 vld's.
