Thinking of a new build

Are you wanting a repeater also do you want a short action? I've had a few that are mentioned and will toss my opinion. My 6.5x47 was a good cartidge, low recoil, feeds well and good accuracy but the drop is a little much IMO for a varminter. The 6x47 is a great little range gun, does everything the 6.5 does your purpose at less cost per shot but obviously you need to neck it down. The straight BR is great option, the accuracy is amazing and great barrel life and decent ballistics (its better as a varminter in a 12-10twist) as well as a dasher if you don't mind the forming. I personally got better accuracy from all my dasher's and I shot them as a varmint gun as well as benchgun and the results were great, it had excellent velocity and didn't give up much to the 6x47 but I never tried to get it to feed from a mag.

I too have a .284 win and it is pretty much my favorite cartridge. The accuracy, barrel life, ballistics are very good. I can shoot the 120 vmax's 3400+ or switch to a VLD with .6+ BC and reach out there. I only shoot it from a bipod and bags and it is more than capable of .3 MOA out to 300yds consistently. Forming the brass is easy by expanding 6.5x284 up in one pass. The downsides are recoil (with a brake the recoil is just a touch more than my dashers were) a short action will work as a single shot if not a LA might be needed to get all that its capable of and the cost per shot. I like it so much that I'm building another one just so I don't shoot out my other barrel as fast.

I'm undecided on SS vs repeater. I have match and varmint AR'S and hunting bolt actions, so plenty of repeaters for field use. I have been thinking about single shot built on a Savage PTA, which I believe is short action.

I did a bit of reading on the 6br and it sounds like a great candidate. I'll have to read up on the 284win as well, but you gave me some strong points. Basic data, it looks similar to 7-08. Basic neck up or down I'm fine with doing, I just don't want a round that requires extreme forming and neck turning or fire forming.

If I went the R700 route, I'd probably stick to bdl to start, but may convert to bdm with AICS mags.

The one thing that will spearhead this project is whichever action I come across at the right time for a price I like. Who knows, I might find a killer deal on a Rem M30 action, I'm known for liking odd ball guns, lol! I've already got a sporter m1917 so I'm used to the dog leg bolt.

I have spent a lot of time shooting both, and prefer my Jewel trigger to any that are available for the Savage. Back in the day, I installed and then wrote what I believe was the first review of the then new Rifle Basix Sav II trigger. It was published in Precision Shooting magazine. My Savages have all shot well, but IMO, the trigger options for Remingtons, and actions that take that pattern of trigger are much better. Many shooters have no experience with a really good trigger, and so this is hard for them to judge or understand.

For the intended purpose of this build, I was planning on getting trigger somewhere around 2# so it isn't ridiculously light for field use. In Service Rifle comp, we're limited to 4.5# min trigger pull, so I'm used to slightly heavier triggers.

I've read that the Savage Target Accutrigger is supposed to be a fairly decent trigger, can be adjusted down to 6oz or so.

But, I'm putting the cart before the horse at the moment, though you are correct, it is wise to plan all this out before hand.

After some reading on the various carts listed here, I've ruled out the 284win as a little too big to be considered a mid sized cart for me. 6br seems a bit on the small size for me and I'm really still liking the 6.5x47. Now, I'll most likely be going with a 700 repeater action and possibly a remage barrel. Who are the trusted remage barrel makers out there offering reasonably priced (<$500) prefit barrels?

Next would be a matter of the chamber, are there options for the 6.5x47 like there are for .308? I.e. neck diameter (I want no turn for Lapua brass) and throat length to be able to handle the majority of bullet weights well.

This project likely won't be started until after the new year, but I'd like to get a working BOM to go from or to edit as needed.

I do appreciate all the advice.

A few years back, I bought a custom 700 Rem in 260 that was very accurate. I sold it only because Lapua brass was not yet available. I then had a BAT single shot rifle built in 6.5x47 Lapua. It was an awesome rifle with a great Krieger barrel, McMillan A-5 stock, and NF optics loaded with Lapua brass. As much as I loved the 6.5x47 Lapua, I likely would have stayed with the .260 had Lapua brass then been available. My rifle range is limited to 300 yards but, as you can see in previous posts, both do well at longer distances. I think either would serve you well.

I've been wanting to build a mid sized caliber rifle for a while now, but I've been going back and forth on what to start with.

Parameters: something no smaller than 6mm, no bigger than 7mm. Barrel will likely be a varmint type taper, probably around 28". Factory action for a working man's budget. Ease of finding an accurate load a plus, and decent barrel life (3k or so) This will be built paycheck by paycheck.

Intended purpose: general range toy, possibly predator hunting from a blind (not spot and stalk type hunting), 1000 yard maybe, but most likely 600 and under. Not built for any specific class type shooting or competition, but may be used for various club level steel matches from a bipod. Hope to keep weight under 14 pounds.

So far, I'm thinking either Savage or R700, but with the Savage I'm not sure if single shot or repeater is what I want. I guess I'd be fine with single shot, but my uncle has the tools for truing 700 actions. Barrel would likely be McGowan or BHW as I have owned both and had good results for the budget I can afford.

I've been intrigued by the 6.5x47L cartridge recently and it seems to fit in this particular set of parameters. I have also been considering .260 or plain-jane 6mmRem, but my dad has two 6's and my mom has one 6 that will be mine eventually. I DO NOT want a .308, as I'm a .30-'06 guy who doesn't want another 30 to feed as well as it being over 7mm like I stated earlier.

No highly involved wildcats, I'd like to be able to buy some factory ammo or brass and do not want to neck turn. I'm fine with having a chamber for a specific weight class of bullets, as well as sending fired brass off for custom dies, but beyond basic neck up/down with a bushing die, I don't want to deal with that much brass prep for this rifle.

My area of match rifle experience has been with AR'S and I have everything I need and want covered there, with all the accuracy I could want, but for bolt guns I've always been more of the "hunter" mindset. Light, honest 1.5 MOA with cheap factory ammo, etc.

So, what do the collective great minds of these board have to say, am I on a snipe hunt? Or, am I headed down a reasonably simple path?

I put together what you need. Savage target action, HS stock, CBI 6BR 8 tw barrel. Best accuracy, best barrel life. I have a 6 BRX, great round, but you have fire forming.

There is a Savage LRP .260 for sale in the classifieds, this is real close to fitting the bill. It is just a barrel swap away from a 6br.

Ok, so I've been building this rifle in my head and would like to get some thoughts on what I've come up with so far.

I'm thinking Stiller Tac30 action, Stocky's LR/T stock, tuned factory rem trigger (no more than 2#), M4 removable magazine conversion, barrel would be Rem Heavy Varmint contour 28" 1:8, 6.5x47L.

Barrel brand and interface is where I'm unsure. Can I do a remage to a stiller action? Will the M4 magazine work with the action? Thinking I might end up just under $2k before optics.

Thoughts?

Having a large supply/selection of factory ammo is not a significant factor to me, I am not even sure the last time I shot a box of factory ammo that wasn't rim fire, lol! No need to worry about forming brass from .308 (a la 260, if needed) and realistically, this gun is going to spend the majority of its time inside of 600-800 yards so I won't need to load to 70k/psi to get it moving quick enough. The note about hunting with it is also a slim possibility, would more or less be a novelty to do so with this rifle, but is still a possibility for me.

Think "generic tactical rifle" that can shoot club level steel matches well, punch paper good and just be fun to shoot at distance. Not going to be a primary match gun in any way. I'm pretty devoted to my ARs when it comes to match shooting. This gun will live on a bipod and probably see only a few hundred rounds a year.
