Cerakote-like finish question

I want to apply a new finish to a synthetic Sako A7 stock. I bought some Wheeler Engineering "Cerama-Coat" in the aerosol can. Basically their version of Cerakote. For plastics and synthetics, it needs to bake at 200 degrees for 2 hrs. I can't quite fit the stock in a conventional cooking oven. Local stores have large 40" electric food smokers with thermostat regulated temperature that would fit the stock. Temp range settings on the smokers is between 100-275 degrees. Anyone ever tried using a smoker to bake on coatings? Do you think it will work?

My main concern is that a smoker is kind of designed to keep moisture trapped inside.

Being summer, I bet if you made a box and painted it black, you could leave it out in the sun. Stick a meat thermometer thru the side to test it. Maybe put it on the driveway to boost the temp. Might work. I get in my black car these days and it feels like 200. Good luck.

Lol. Not that hot in Montana yet. We finally got a spring this year and it's been beautiful. Most years it goes from winter to blistering summer heat in a week flat

So ya just have to wait a week!;) Lucky guy! I love Montana. Great trout fishing. My father and I used to fish near Hamilton. The local diner sold sticky buns for a buck that were 6 inches round and 2 inches thick.

Yeah we've got some great towns and the fishing is phenomenal at times. Probably take the boat out this weekend. I like the Hamilton area. Have a few good friends live down there. I'm about 3 hours north of Hamilton.

Somewhere on the net a guy made an oven out a piece of stove pipe set on a electric hotplate and some kind of lid for the top.

I've heard of people making cerakote ovens out of old cheap gun safes in the same fashion. I believe an electric smoker will basically give the same effect. Just leave the hot plate for the wood chips empty, set the temp, and turn it on.

I might have to give it a try after hearing that a chunk of stove pipe worked. Lol.

Worst case, I'll have a new smoker for my meat :)

So, there ya go. Living thru a Montana winter, you must have one of those little ceramic heaters to stick in the box you build out of 1/4 or 1/2 inch plywood.

Definitely looking for something a little more hi-tech and preferably pre-manufactured. Don't mind spending $300-$400 on a good large smoker if it will work. Then I'd have a dual purpose machine too

I use an old barbecue grill
Modified a little for better temp control

Before that I tried everything , under the hood of my older jeep would maintain aprx 250.

Heat lamps can work if you keep an eye on the temperature. For the $300 you say you would spend you could mail it to a cerakote applicator and have money left, but doing it yourself is good. I am a cerakote guy and use an oven, but used to use heatlamps sometimes to cure composite parts for aircraft. A couple of hardware store lamps and heat bulbs with an ir thermometer will get you there.

The smoker will work fine, my baking cabinet uses a element from a smoker, no issues. Whatever you do, DO NOT bake any of that stuff in your oven.
There are some very bad things in most of those coatings, most 2 part will have a form of isocynanide in them. Not what you want in your food. Whatever you are spraying, invest in a good paint mask and I don't mean a dust mask. You don't need that stuff in your lungs.

Forget the Cerama-coat and use Krylon Fusion spray paint. No chipping, bonds with the plastic/synthetic stock material, air cure, and WAY cheaper $4-7 dollars a can.
