My son suggested we go groundhog hunting for Father's Day (raised him right didn't I?) so we went out for an hour this evening. We managed to get two. A little one close with the 222 and then i shot one at about 400 yards with the Swift. Again because of the hills and flats i could not get a range, so had to guess. I set the scope at 425, thinking "If it is 400, it will hit if I hold chest and if it is 450, I will hit low, but the Swift has the gas to dump him even if I am low". Mr. Chuck stood up, I put the 10X T scope between the shoulders and lit one off. I saw the bullet trail and hit, with a called high hit in the head. When we went to get him for photo proof, I discovered him to be the best "snerted" shot of the year so far. Check out that dental work!
The rifle is an old 1950's bench rifle, unknown barrel make, full inch diameter, highly modified Arisaka action, unbedded and no recoil lug, just a screw. The stock is walnut. Because the lower portion of the stock is so thin I cannot put a stud in it, hence the shotgun sling and yes, duct tape! 19 Pounds, a lock time measured with a calendar and yet, despite pits in the barrel, this gun has kills on crows over 500 yards and chucks at 700 yards. 40 grains H380, 55 grain Vmax, fed primer, once fired and neck sized brass.
Mr M, the fields are all being cut and raked as we speak! My weekends are taken, but I am open during the week!
