6mm-6.8 Rem SPC vs 6 WOA

Being that both theses cartridges are based off the same parent case, are they identical in all aspects of the cases themselves? If not, what are the differences?

I'm not sure if the taper was changed, or shoulder location, but I'd bet the details would be best coming from John as he's got the why too.

Next question, I'm guessing you have a bolt already, but have you reviewed the 6mmAR? I think there is a little more support for the 6mmAR than 6WOA, but I may be wrong.

Yes, my gun is a bolt gun [Savage], I think the 6mmAR has more support only due to the parent case because you can get Lapua brass for it. If Lapua or Norma started making brass for the 6.8 Rem SPC, I think you would see more people shooting all variants of it.

When I wanted a 6mm 6.8 version I went with the 6x6.8 since there is no fire forming, just a simple neck down, load & go. It runs in speed next to the 243 w/less powder, so my 243 sits in the safe.
The main difference is the WOA has a 30 degree shoulder vs a 23 degree shoulder for the 6X6.8.
I built 1 6x6.8 on an AR15 frame, sold it and built 3 on the Savage actions.
Perfect for p-dogs to Antelope and accurate as all get out.
Mostly the 6mm WOA rigs are built for long range target shooting with heavy bullets from my research.

A friend of mine shot the 6 PDK on our recent PD shoot. IIRC, we decided it was based on the 6.8SPC as well. Whatever it is, it destroys prairie dogs! I am sure it would be good for deer or antelope too. It seemed to be a pretty flat shooting round too.

I have a 6mm woa from carey custom rifles. It's a rad coyote gun 65gr vmax zipping along at 3400fps. Simple to reload just resize with the die from white oak, fill with benchmark and shoot. It's purfect for a ar15 limited by length.

Not sure it's the right choice in a bolt gun. It just does not have the power to push the heavy 6mm bullets. It shines with light stuff

What size bullets are you going to shoot?

Following. I just purchased a BHW barrel chambered in 6x6.8 from Ritch's Precision Guns and it should be here in 2-4 weeks. I liked that I could simply neck down 6.8 brass and shoot a decent sized bullet at 243 velocities.

Aeon, I plan to shoot bullets between 70-80gr. I broke in the barrel shooting some 55grr Noslers and now I'm ready to start working up a load. I have RL-15 and IMR 4166 [i can't find Varget at the moment] along with Win 748 and variety of other powders. What's a good starting point with this 12 twist barrel?

As stated on the WOA, the shoulder angle and neck diameter are different. Since they are a wildcat, I'd go with the WOA or the PDK and get the most from the case in an AR. Pretty much a neck up and shoot, no need for any case-forming gymnastics. The first firing will shoot fine. I have an AR match rifle in 6PDK which takes the 6.8 case, blows out the body, improves the shoulder and moves the shoulder forward about .050" so it has a couple grains more capacity and just a little more work to form. I fireform in competition and they will clean the x-ring if I can. I just finished loading some moly coated Hornady 87gr HPBT for a match tomorrow with 28gr of Varget in SSA cases. It is a mild load. I'd advise staying away from SSA cases, mine vary a lot in neck thickness and I've never heard anyone that knows what they are doing say they are a quality 6.8SPC case. Hornady and Remington get good reviews but watch primer size because some use LR and some SR and capacity is different. I've got three or four firings on my SSA and I continue to get neck/shoulder splits even though I annealed twice. I'm going to Hornady when I get tired of screwing around with these cases.

What twist did you go with on your 3 bolt guns?

My main prone rig is standard 6.8spcII chamber, I too found the SSA brass to vary far too much. I was loosing the primer pockets at the 4th loading in over 60% of one lot at book max charges (book max is for short throat dimensions with lower pressure threshold, not spcII chamber). I now use S&B brass only with excellent results. Length does vary from factory a little bit, so trim if buying 1x fired, but otherwise I have some going on 6 loadings and pockets are just starting to loosen up but are still useable. I use Hornady in another 6.8 rifle and it's been pretty good, but watch out as some of it is crimped primer. Hornady LR primer pocket hasn't been around for a while, but Rem still is.
