Shilen DGA Bolt face

Well, I'm having a hard time getting an answer about opening the bolt face of this Shilen DGA action being they quit production 20+ years ago. Customer wants to open the bolt face up from a .378-222 Remington size to a
.472-6 mm Remington size. Problem is, the extractor is not going to let me be able to use it in said location because of opening the bolt face up. Any ideas or quick fixes most appreciated. Thanks, Todd DuBose

I don't see the problem. Remove the extractor by pressing a thin pin through the hole and slide it out. Catch the plunger and spring under the extractor as they try to jump out. Drive out the ejector retaining pin. Remove the ejector and catch the spring under it. Open up the bolt face as needed. Reinstall the ejector. Make a new extractor ( assuming you can't buy one from Shilen) to fit the new bolt face. From the pics in Otteson's , "Benchrest Actions and Triggers", it appears that the ctc distance between the firing pin hole and the extractor hole is the same on all bolt faces, but I may be wrong. If need be, you could always plug the existing extractor hole and move it over as required. Making a new extractor is a simple job on the mill. Make it out of 4140, 01 drill rod or similar and hardening it to about RC40 would be nice, but not essential.

This is what the Shilen extractor looks like. It's actually cut into the lug. I'm just not sure about how much room I'm going to have after the face is opened up.

It's like this. If Shilen did it, you should be able to. If you lay a ruler on your screen and accounting for the slight perspective change, it look's like all three use the same distance from firing pin to extractor plunger.

call Shilen........... they`re good folks........

Thanks for the help. I did call Shilenplus a bunch of people that are known for their work on actions and to no avail, I decided to leave it like it is and talk the customer into rebarlling it to a 223 Remington. Looks like he is happy with that and it's doing a great job at dispensing crows and varmints for him now. He's happy and I am too!! Thanks again, Todd

Well, I'm having a hard time getting an answer about opening the bolt face of this Shilen DGA action being they quit production 20+ years ago...Unless the old actions were different than the new ones,i`d say their still making them as we just got one less than 2 months ago.

I have opened up a 223 to 308, you will need to modify the existing extractor claw, not a huge drama just don't take off too much as they're no longer available. Another thing the bolt is very hard, you'll need to use quality carbide tips, and depending on the caliber you may as well bush the bolt and turn down the firing pin.

Look and see how much metal will be left between the plunger hole (under the extractor) and the new .47X case pocket cut in the bolt face. Have you thought about a PT&G bolt? Dave was going to offer Winchester bolts.

You didn't get a DGA as they quit production at least 20 years or so. They offer the DG-R and the DG-V now. They have a bolt similar to the Savage. 2 different animals.
