Straight .284 recoil in a 22b gun, what is it compared to.

I would say it is about like a .260 with 140 class bullets out of s 8 (or so) pound rifle. I am not particularly fond of recoil and I can shoot a 20 shot string plus sighters with no problems whatsoever..

I don't think a 284 will bother anybody that loves to shoot. 270 and 30-06 are equal in recoil with 150-160 grain bullets. You'll have no issues with shooting that 284 all day long.

I also am on the fence about this particular cartridge due to recoil. I've been shooting a 7mm rem mag for the past few years and if a guy can handle that recoil the 284win should be a walk in the park from what I've read.

7 mag in a 22 lb gun should be nothing. 10 grains less powder in a 284 will be pleasant to shoot.
Their is two kinds of recoil (true recoil )
And (felt) recoil
Felt recoil changes with how the shooter is positioned to receive it.
Laying down wher your body can't move is about as bad as it gets.
That takes year of training .
The 284 is not pleasant to shoot .
In the hands of the right shooter it is definitely the gun of choice . Larry

284 Win. with 150 grain bullet - 17.4 ft lbs of recoil energy.
260 Rem. with 140 grain bullet - 11.9
308 Win. with 150 grain bullet - 15.8
30-06 with 150 grain bullet - 17.6

I pondered the same thing as I built my 284 Shehane. Much to my surprise it is indeed a longer push instead of a hard punch. I shoot with a sling and have no problems thus far.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

My rifle weighs 19#. I can shoot it all day long with no fatigue from recoil. I lay behind it, bump my shoulder in, and give the trigger a little squeeze with my finger, (no hard hold), and that's it.

Absolutely amazing. 180 degrees opposed from all of the other responses.

I was always the guy that liked small rounds with less recoil. Have a 284 and LOVE it! Have been shooting it at 600 as well. In a FOpen rifle with a long barrel and heavy stock I wouldn't worry about it. I guess I am assuming your an averaged built male.

A 22 lb gun changes alot of ordinary felt recoil. I believe those felt recoil numbers are based on all guns being equal in weight. I will say that my 284 that's built on the long action and shoots the 180s definitely has more push than my short action 284 that I shoot 150-168s with. Both are very tolerable however and I enjoy shooting them but they also weight in at 12-18 lbs. Alot of lightweight guns in 270 on up have kind of a nasty kick that's not much fun to deal with. I think that comes from the overall lightness of the package. I have a 20" barreled 243 that is light sporter weight and kicks pretty good for a 243. Again, very light gun maybe 5 - 5.5 lbs total. They definitely aren't created equal.

The link that BoydAllen posted is very realistic. Shows how much physical weight changes felt recoil. Most charts I believe are based on gun weights being equal or very close to equal.

Stock design position shooting all change the felt recoil .
I shoot a 25 lb dasher off a bench with a brake . And the recoil is too much .
I still can get a flinch from all the big gun previous . Larry
