25br information please

I bought an oddball Remington XP-100 to shoot metallic silhouette with. I've wanted an xp-100 and the price was right. What I didn't know was what an oddball the 25br was. I am having zero luck finding saami specs or any information on it. I have 5 reloading manuals and none of them have anything about it at all. The gun came with a data card and a few loads, but I would like more . Thank you .. K

Pretty sure there won't be.

It sounds like a wildcat built off of the 6 mm Benchrest Remington or 6 mm Norma BR: http://ammoguide.com/?catid=26

BTW case dimensions are the same for these two. The difference is in the details of freebore and throat.

Measure your brass if you have some and compare with the specs. If the dimensions don't match, Ammoguide also has a good search tool yiu can use with your brass dimensions. Be sure to use the tolerance option because there will be small differences between what yu measure and the nominal dimensions in their datqbase.

Did you get dies too?

It isn't at all, an oddball. It is simply the 6BR case necked up to 25 caliber. I have prepped brass, and a no neck turn JGS reamer for that case. A call to Randy Robinett will answer any and all questions you might have. You won't find data in a reloading manual. Using the Robinett 88 grain bullets, or something in that weight range, Benchmark is a good powder, along with the CCI 450 primers. Send a PM to me and i'll provide you with a starting load. The rate of twist in that barrel is of great importance, and will determine the range of bullets you can successfully use. Dimensionally, the difference between the 6BR and 25BR is the neck diameter.

Yes I have dies. They are Redding marked as 25 br REM.
I have 280 pieces of RP brass marked with 6mm BR REM on the bottom
50 of them are loaded with 24.5 grains of 2015 behind a 120 grain BT Hornady
The barrel is 14" long .. I do not know the twist.

Without knowing the rate of twist, it's a guessing game as to the weight and length bullet you can use. That's a heavy bullet for that case, and 2015 is a fast burning powder.

There are NO SAAMI specs on ANY of the BR cartridges.

Of course there is SAAMI specs for the 6BR cartridge.

I am sorry... but you are wrong - the BR family never received acceptance by SAAMI because Remington never applied for it, and now it is too late (after some 40-ish years).

I have the SAAMI standards site open all the time on my computer (I use it for work), and there are NO BR cartridges on the acceptance list.

Maybe I should have worded it differently? The 6BR Norma cartridge has SAAMI approval, as does the 6.5x284.

I don't know either way, for fact...but would think that since Savage started chambering for the 6BR that it would've had to received SAAMI acceptance...maybe not. Either way, that's a subject that really doesn't help the op. It would seem that he needs load data to work with.

That site hasn't been updated for 4 years. I'll find the info and post it. CIP factory cartridges could not be sold in the U.S. without SAAMI approval…. AFAIK.

"... That site hasn't been updated for 4 years." And the BR family is ~40+ years old - your point is ???

"CIP factory cartridges could not be sold in the U.S. without SAAMI approval…. "

That is also not true.

There are many foreign cartridges sold in the USA that are not SAAMI approved - SAAMI does not have any authority to ban foreign cartridges...

I look forward to your information. I am sure it will be enlightening.

A company does NOT need SAAMI approval to put a rifle or caliber on the market. SAAMI has NO authority - it is a "Voluntary Compliance Organization"

Is it possible CIP approved cartridges are automatically approved by SAAMI due to their relationship? Take a look at the Daily Bulletin on the PPC. Though SAAMI does not list the 6PPC on their site, it was SAAMI approved.

I have forwarded info to the OP.

Sorry for the derailment on your thread, Kurt!

That stands to reason. Ruger, Sako, Cooper and probably others, have all chambered rifles in 6PPC. As I said, I don't know either way to be fact. I do know that from a liability standpoint, insurance companies view wildcats differently than SAAMI approved chamberings..fwiw...believe it or not.
Ya'll carry on.

"While SAKO has created an official SAAMI 6PPC round, called the 6PPC USA"

That is not true - Sako (nor anyone else) cannot "create a SAAMI round" -there are a kajillion myths about SAAMI.

For a case to be accepted, the maker MUST request an approval, and SAAMI looks at many things - for example, when Nosler wanted to market the 280 Ackley Improved, SAAMI denied it, because there were so many versions of the 280 AI (every gunsmith did it "his way")...
So Nosler had to redesign the cartridge so it would not work in the regular 280 AI, before it could be approved... which is why NO Ackleys will ever be approved. Redding now makes dies for the Nosler 280 improved, and will no longer make dies for the Ackley 280 AI.

If a cartridge is a wildcat (and the BR family are technically all wildcats), and people are making them to various measurements, then SAAMI will never touch it.

There were thousands of PPC's floating around before Sako came out with their version (which, in reality, is the same thing - I had one)... and with thousands out there, the PPC was doomed as a SAAMI cartridge - plus there was the licensing issues (which is why Sako did what they did).
