Shilen vs Bartlein

I agree regarding the burr due to the reamer.
In this case the 6BR and the 22-250 were done by the same gunsmith who is a highly respected benchrest shooter and gunsmith, and the 22-250 reamer was new, as I ordered it for this job.

I am not blaming the barrel maker, just stating my preferences based upon my limited experience.

Even a new reamer can cut a poor chamber. Depending on the maker of the reamer we will run it into a scrap barrel and see how it cuts, check the finish and check sizes. Been down the road where a brand new reamer wrecks the barrels!

Fouling? Bullets can cause copper fouling besides a rough throat. The jackets will vary from lot to lot. Also velocities can cause fouling to go up as well. The .22-250 is going to push the bullet faster than the 6BR. You have a lot of differences between the two and not just the barrels.

Some copper in the bore is normal. As long as it's not causing an accuracy issue don't sweat it to much. If it's causing an accuracy problem then you have a problem but what's causing it can be several different things.

The reamer is a JGS, ordered to match a bullet/case combination. I do not have any accuracy problems, the Bartlein barrel shoots just fine, and I am happy with it. The barrel is new, and I will have to shoot it more. The coppering is NOT excessive, and much better than the barrel it replaced. Being a 22-250, with higher velocity, some coppering is to be expected.

Thank you for your information, as I shoot more, read more on this forum, and build up new rifles, I am constantly learning.

Powderbrake, Your welcome! Thanks for the response to the thread also. Also the steel the barrel was made out of can vary from lot to lot as well. If I had to pick a reamer maker I would say Hugh Henrikson flat out makes the best tool but you can wait a bit for it. JGS is also tops in my book.

Frank,
The comment about waiting for a Henrikson reamer is an understatement. If you are 65 yrs. or older I would not order from Hugh as you may not live long enough to use it. Lol. :p:D

Thanks for all the responses guys. I had pretty much decided on the Bartlein but thought I'd invest $50 in a USB borescope and some Cerrosafe just to check out the barrel I have now. The borescope showed the barrel was in good shape except for some throat erosion and heavy copper fouling just past the throat. I cleaned the copper out and did a chamber cast with the Cerrosafe to see how far out I needed to move the seating depth to chase the lands. Below is one of my son's groups from this morning. After my tune up I think I can wait a while for a new barrel.

FrankG, my gunsmith is installing a Bartein 26 inch barrel for my 300 Win Mag soon , can't wait to shoot extreme range with the heavy Bergers. :)

I would like people to think Bartlein is not so good... so I can get my hands on them quicker. (Just joking) I use both Krieger and Bartlein... and I would buy both in a heart beat...currently I lean more to Bartlein... for no reason. Maybe I just like the youtube factory tour...and the equipment I saw.

That's my buddy Todd in the beginning of the video there! Wish I had 10 more like him here!
