winchester model 70 heavy barrel varmint rifle 26in barrel

im sorry but this has got to be the dumbest question ever asked on a shooting forum

Now, go easy please. I've seen dumber questions. Some guys are raising a family and have budget concerns.

Welcome to the forum. Nice thing about the rifle you mentioned is low recoil for the kids(and you) and it's "ready to shoot" .

On the barrel length: A lot of "long Rangers" shoot 30"s.

To quickly assess value, look on gunbroker for a comparison. It'll give you a general idea.

Please go buy it or give me the phone number and I will right now.LOL You need this gun,it is the most accurate rifle's out of the box they ever sold.

Listen to Jon. He knows of what he speaks. Don't hold his NY residency against him.

I had a 70 HV in 243, sold it to a forum member on here. Wish I didn't ! I loved that thing! Super smooth action! My cousin has one that in 223 that he turned into a 223 Ackley and it is a hammer!!

I had one of those rifles in 223 when they came out. Made it into 223 ackley and put a jewell in it.That gun killed lots of prairie dogs for me and was a great shooter.I shot out the factory barrel and then put a Kreiger on it . I kept Hornady busy making 40 grain vmaxes for it.

Satire...its my fault

1:9 twist? Pretty sure Winchester USRAC contracted the Heavy Varmints to Wilson, so you're getting an aftermarket barrel of match grade. Lots of winners with John Holliger's Wilson barrels...

HS Precision stock in Win Marksman configuration, ie w/flat & wide forend?

Hope you pulled the trigger and took the rifle home... Try some Nosler 75gr bthp match or Hornady 75hgr bthp in it. If they don't group, you'll do fine with 69/68gr

would to get input from members regarding a botl action rifle i saw:
winchester model 70 heavy barrel varmint, 223 caliber, 26 inch barrel.
any opinions regarding this rifle. barrel too long??
what would be ideal barrel lenght for precision shooting up to 600 yards??

VERSUS: savage 10 PC 20 inch barrel in 223 caliber?

I currently have the savage 10 PC in the 308 and love the way it shoots

thanks

I own the exact rifle, and is one of the best in my 40+ collection. It is accurate, stable, with no bad habits - barrel life is almost forever, it has a 9" twist, and will shoot 69 and 75 grain bullets... and the barrel is NOT too long !!
You will love it.

2nd, why do you want another rifle?

What a terrible question to ask another shooter - sounds like something my "Ex" wife would ask (which is one of the reason she is my Ex).

The answer to the question, "... Why do you want another rifle?" is...

... Because it is there !!!

I ordered in a M70HV in 223 back in '97 IIRC - 1st thing I noticed out of the box was that there was a punch mark on the muzzle that displaced metal out over the bore. Looked like it was done deliberately, but if so, by whom? - it was NIB. Had a local smith cut a new crown, only to discover that the chamber was grossly oversize - this made me wonder if the punch mark on the muzzle was some sort of factory inspector's mark that was overlooked, and a rifle with a defective chamber was shipped. Sent it back to Winchester, they re-barreled it, but the replacement bbl had an out-of-round chamber. By this time, I was totally disgusted with Winchester's QC, so explained what was going on with it to a dealer and get rid of it.

Several years later, after buying a lathe to do my own bbl work, I bought a M70 Stealth in 223 - very similar to the HV, but with matte black finish bbl. This one was advertised as having a 1-9tw bbl, but when I tried some S80MKs in it, I found that they shot very well. Measured the twist rate and found it was 1-8.3, a very odd rate, but again, it shot pretty darned good with the Sierra 80s. However, when I examined the bore with a Hawkeye borescope, I found some really nasty machine marks in the last 4" at the muzzle, which went a long ways towards explaining why it coppered badly. I had a PacNor match grade 1-7.5tw four groove blank of roughly the same contour, so used a 223 Match reamer in it, trued the receiver face, and wound up with a very accurate 223. With a Jard trigger, EGW one pc 20 MOA scope rail, and an inexpensive Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 scope, it's the rifle I use to introduce new shooters to 600yd shooting.

The heavy varmint is a great gun. I have the 223 and 308. Great shooters. Looking for one in 243
I just acquired one of these Winchester Model 70 Varmint Rifles with 26 inch barrel and Walnut stock.... My rifle is chambered in .22-250... Looking forward to developing a great reload and fine tuning for Accuracy!

Hi JWA: Welcome to the forum. Try some 52 grain Sierras with RL-15. The combo works great in my 22-250s.:)

I don't agree, and as a shooter that has owned dozens of different rifles, I realize the attraction for adding gear. The "why" is always important, even if it's "just because" -- which is one of the best reasons. We didn't know if the OP might have thought his .308 Win wouldn't be adequate at 600y. We didn't know that the OP wanted a lighter-recoiling rig for his kids.

As to the "dumbest question ever asked on a shooting forum", I submit that there are way better candidates, such as "Savage or Remington?", "9mm or .45?", "what scope should I buy", and "does voting Democrat mean I hate the 2nd Amendment?".

Remington, 45, Expensive and yes....there, that settles that.

thanks for replies;
a: it is a HBV (heavy barrel varmint gun)
b: it is 1:9 twist

I have younger kids that like shooting and I am now set up at home for reloading 223 , 243, and 308.
i love my Savage 308 PC: it is very precise rifle: my perfecdt loat it likes is Sierra 168 gr, set at 2.864 in using AA2520 at 44.0 gr,I am able to get 1/4 inch at 100 and at 200 getting 3/8 inch from benchrest: Scope is Millet LRS 6-24 x 56 milldot

it is always fun to try to worup new caliber for kids to shoot, they are smaller so recoil is an issue.

How much members think this gun is worth, this rifle i am looking at is basically NIB: less then 50 round down the barrel,
dealer is asking : $800 with harris bipod and leupold mounts, i have to figure out what scope to get if i decide on buying it

1:9 twist would be good for shooting up to about 400-500 yards??
thanks

The $800.00 asking price is similar to one that I have been looking at for 2 years at a shop in Lakewood WA although it's a 22/250 in great shape they are holding firm. I offered $600.00 does the one your looking at have the wide Beavertail fore arm?
Also keep in mind that if it's in excellent condition and you pay a little extra you have a Winchester M70 factory varmint rifle!
Nice find..
Jim
