BRambo..First blood

Finally got some great weather so I took my Hart 6 BR out for a test run on groundhogs. Over the winter I had a brake put on and the action bedded in a 40X stock. This rifle had given me fits in its old McMillan Marksman stock. It has now settled right down for me.

I managed to go 5 for 8. I did have several that took a few "sighters" before a solid hit, but for a first time out, not bad. Longest hit was 471, and longest miss was 494. I was able to spot hits myself, which I could not do last year without the brake. I was particularly happy because though I am somewhat mobility impaired due to a back surgery, I did grab rifle and binocs, and was able to slither up (BRambo) on two. So grateful for those steroid shots in my spine I got two weeks ago! It felt great to slide into a divot in the field, improvise a rest with my fist and binocs, and pop both chucks (276 and 228 yards) with one shot each. Later I managed to "helicopter" a chuck with a 70 grain Blitzking at 154 yards. Lifted him right off the ground, spun him in a full circle, inverted him and dumped him and parts back on the mound. With the brake i got to see it all! Sorry no photos...I do not even own a cell phone camera.

Nice way to start the season.

Good job buddy. Glad to hear that you're out kickin it.

What power scope are you using on the 6BR. My 24x makes it pretty hard to witness the kill. I'm almost thinkin of getting a variable for just varmint hunting. It's just so damned shocking to see the prices on good ones. jd

Leupold VX3 6.5-20, set on 20. Gun has a 27 inch heavy barrel, bigger than VS contour, and the action is an experimental Hart BR in which the barrel is "sleeved" for about three inches. Basically a LONG 700, only bigger. In a walnut 40X rimfire stock...It is a tote that is for sure, and it hardly moves when fired with the Vais brake n it. I would bet it is over 14 pounds but have not weighed it. it is heavier than my 40XB 22-250

Yeah, mine is the little 20" 40XBR, which I think comes in at ten pounds without scope. I'm thinkin of putting some weight in the fore-end cutouts. With lead, I could add a couple pounds up front where it would do some good. I'm about to order up some pillars for bedding also. Earnie's I guess. jd

Those little XBR are nice. I tried to find a vintage BR stock that they came with back in the day for my 722 40X clone, but settled on a cheap 40X rimfire stock from Numrich. $60 and elbow grease and it finished real nice,. Looks awkward with a 19 inch hart 7 taper on it though. When I can I will rebarrel at 24 inches. Hopefully after a prairie dog shoot I will need to rebarrel it!!!!

The other thing that helped this rifle was a little fine tuning of the Jewel I had in it. I fiddled with it till I got it heavy enough but crisp with no take up and it shoots better now.

i bet that 22BR is a doodle

Good to hear they were out & about, P!
And its always fun to air out a recently dolled up rifle, seeing the hits in the scope makes for big grins!!!

Snert...
If we lived close enough I would by you some fine Tequila or at least your favorite coffee. I tip my hat to anyone who does NOT own a cell capable of taking photos and video...if justice is alive someday I'm going to get a clear shot at the guy who dreamed up those damn things.
Ok...I'm getting off my box.
Great way to start the season and best wishes with the back...listen to your Doctor.

Why thank you Monty! I would take the coffee, or a good rye on rocks. However, I doubt I will ever make it to the west coast. Far as I plan to be is Canon City CO. Gotta try some PD in OK then back across to the left east coast to muck it up with some chucks in june.

Great stuff Snert! I haven't made it out yet and have three new rigs to blood!
The 6X45AI is starting to shoot.

You and Fredo must be a matched set. he introduced me to one of those (and an incredible 6.5 Snarlenblaster) and I am duly impressed. He is on his game that is certain. It is looking like two good farms this year. One is all table shooting at 200-700. Most gravy in 350-450 range. The other is a long poke across a valley, 650 to first dirt and at 850 it gets too flat (bullet skip) to shoot farther. Nice breezes, big hogs, long slow day under a tent with benches and a cooler...can you feel the shiver? can't wait for first cut

See you in June

I can feel it my friend. Looks forward to it.

Just loaded up a bunch of 6x45AI FF loads in new Winny brass with 70Blitzkings & XMR2015. Maybe get some 'chuck action next weekend with 'em...

If Mr.Maj is coming up to CNY, please keep me in the loop! Would love to tag along. I'll bring the Mt. Dews and spottin' scope w/video adaptor. If you're gonna whack some 'chucks, may as well catch the fun on video! Heck, that's almost as fun as shootin' em!

And we could always head back my way in the middle of the day & bang away at the steel, if the chuck action slows down...

Good read, a good start to the season. What range finder are you using if you don't mind sharing.

i bought a Newcon from Bullets.com when they were closeout. !200 yard, and on sale for @ $260 if memory serves. At that price I could not ignore it and I do like it. Aiming circle is a bit big, and who knows if it is as "closed beam" as a Lieca, but a lot of chucks seem to not dispute its findings
