Why magnum small rifle primers?

I noticed in my Sierra manual, that it was using Magnum small rifle primers with H4895 powder. Is there a reason for this? Could it be older info? I am shooting the 6MM BR in a 15" pistol barrel?

I use CCI 450 magnum primers in my 6mm BR Norma with IMR 4895 (yeah I know it's not the same as H 4895) for one reason. Because everyone who beats me uses magnum primers in their 6mm BR. Those I beat, use magnum primers too.

There is very little pressure/velocity variance between SR primers (like equal to a couple tenths of powder charge at most, across the board). For example with the CCI-450, I have actually seen less pressure/velocity in a couple combo's then with the CCI-400.
"Magnum primers" are over-rated in my opinion/experience, that in the most part I look at them as just another choice that happens to have "Magnum" in its name.

Thanks. I have been using Federal and Winchester Reg SRP. I now have only Winchester left. That is about all I can find regularly here! I have had great results, but the "Magnum" threw me.

sometimes the magnum primers wont pierce like a regular primer sometimes will,,especially if you havent had your bolt bushed,,the 450s ,Rem 7 1/2s and Tula 5.56 magnums are thicker and will take higher powder charges before they blank,,

in my 6.5x47 Rem 700 it would blank all primers with very light loads,,but after the gre-tan bush job it will function with 205s and very stiff charges with no primer pressure signs,,

I agree with what Big says. The magnum and Remington primers seem to take more without blanking. The CCI BR4 is also very tough. Weak fire control, bumping the shoulder too much and thin cups will also help to blank primers on 6BR and Dashers. Matt

Just like anything else. You don't have to do what the "cool kids" are doing. Try and see for yourself. Spend a couple bucks and buy several brands including magnums and standard primers. Word of caution though, you might be wasting your time and money. You might find as some others and myself included found that the 450 primer actually yielded the best result. My velocity variation (ES) was the lowest and my groups on paper working up a load was by far superior to all other primers that I tried. This is not the case for other (all) cartridges!

I have a carton of CCI 41 small rifle primers, this conversation made me think about using them?
Thanks

Link works fine for me. Can go to the jamescalhoon.com site. The article is in the "informative articles" section and is titled "primers and pressure".

well around 20 years ago I was introduced to the 6BR in the original 14 twist guise by an acquaintance now a old friend and he let me fire a few one hole groups at 100 yards with his and I was hooked. I since have owned several 14 twist BR's and one 8 twist. He told me that very first time I ever shot a BR that the secret to the BR's accuracry was a Magnum primer and he perfered the CCI 450 I never forgot him telling me that..I have shot most primers in mine and the best groups have allway been with the CCI 450 primers. You can shoot good groups with any primer but if you really play with different powders and bullets the CCI 450 Mag is the primer of choice in the BR.
Good book the benchrest shooting primer/articials from precision shooting magazine.
they had one on primers and showed pictures of the flame front of the primers firing and the CCI 450 had kind of a wide torch effect I figure that is why.
