Bullet Testing

I thought I would share some bullet tests I have done shooting in to water jugs to test for penetration and weight retention. Distances have been from 25 yards to 100, 200, 300 400, and 500 yards. I will say it's a trick to keep a bullet inside something as small as gallon milk/water jugs lined up! I hope some of this information is useful to you folks.

Good stuff......

Thanks for sharing

Thanks Donovan, and it's a lot of fun doing it! Plus excellent practice. I'll post more pics when I can.

I should add that on the three different rifles, the same load with each bullet was shot out of the three with each have 18.5, 22, and 26 inch barrels. It gives a pretty good comparison to velocity loss with the shorter barrels. Yes I know to be exact a person would have to start with a long barrel, shoot and record velocities, and then do it again to be exact, but this gives a pretty good representation I believe.

6mm Remington using Nosler Accubonds, Partitions, and E-tips at 400 yards into water jugs. They all penetrated the same and were found in the same distance of jugs. I believe it was 5 or 6 water jugs.

Here is what they looked like from the top. They all performed very well and the E-tip opened up nicely as can be seen from the top. My son shot his first elk with the E-tip at 350 yards. One shot behind the shoulder and the bullet angled forward slightly and broke her off side shoulder before exiting. She went about 20 yards and fell over. 500 pound cow!

Here is how they look set up!

Here is a 100 gr. Partition and a 90 gr. E-tip out of my 6mm into jugs at 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards. I know I don't have the Partition at 300 but we can see what it would look like pretty much. They each performed very well. Again the E-tip is still opening up nicely especially when viewed from the top. I don't have the amount of expansion right handy.

Son's cow with one shot at 100 yards. 300 WSM using handload with 180 gr. Accubond. Found on shoulder on opposite side. She dropped on the spot.

Recovered bullet.

Here is my son with his cow at 350 yards with the 6mm Remington and 90 gr. E-tip.

I took a wild ass guess on this .223 Remington load out of a mini-14 and a factory 64 gr. I chronographed it later and it was 2840 or thereabouts. The bullet really held together and did a nice job though.

Again, great stuff.....

Really shows how greatly distance and/or velocity can effect terminal ballistics, and why bullets could/can fail when they are used at distances/velocities there not optimal for.

Best Regards
Donovan

Interesting thread 6 rem. I bet that takes a lot of jugs. I did a similiar test for the 300BLK. Have you tried any Barnes x bullets compared to the etips in the 25-06 & 6mm Rem? I'm surprised the partitions don't seem to retain much ahead of the divider. Thanks for the show.

Very nice read and congrats to your son on two great shots. Looks like your a fan of nosler bullets and I can see why.

I do this quite often, good clean fun and it keeps the kids interested. The guys at the Recycling center give me some funny looks when I dump the jugs out.

Out of a 338 Win Mag I was not able to catch an E-Tip, it went several jugs farther than the partition. One of the bullets that always surprises me is the 85 gr Game King out of a .243. It travels through the same # of jugs as the flex tip from my buddies .35 Rem. Much different destruction in the last couple jugs, but the same depth. Not sure what the correlation is to game animals, but it lets you know if the bullet will open up or not. The picture is Blazer 230 gr JHP from a .45, I think 3 or 4 water jugs.

I have about 30 jugs saved up, waiting to get my 6 Ackley shooting and test the 85 grain Barnes.
