25-06

timeout

Can a 25-06 be rechambered to a 25-06 AI by reaming only, or is it a cut off and start over? The barrel is like new, custom chamber, not factory. Thanks.

To do it correctly , the barrel must be set back , rechambered , installed and headspaced .
For all that's involved and gained ? It's my opinion it's not worth it , unless you can do it yourself . Even then it's an over bore case and just making it worse .

Forgot to add , the amount removed is usually the length of the neck , since you said a custom chamber . You don't want to end up with a 2 diam neck

I'm guessing custom chamber equals custom barrel. The 25-06 is a barrel burning screamer, the AI screams louder and burns more barrel. If you have a need for speed.............................otherwise, just leave it alone until you get ready to replace the barrel in 8 or 9 hundred rounds. I built one for a friend and it was 100 fps or so faster than a .257 Weatherby.

Yes it can, but the person operating the reamer must understand the reamer will not remove all of the old chamber. The neck on the Ackley is longer than the neck on the 25/06. What that means is the neck/shoulder juncture of the 25/06 will still be there when finished. And then the next question; what does that mean? It means when fire forming the standard 25/06 case will not head space on the new shoulder/neck juncture unless the reamer is run into the chamber far enough to clean up all of the old chamber.

In the perfect world the case neck/shoulder juncture would be formed when chambered and the rest of the shoulder case body would form when fired. And then there is the short chambered barrel and next is setting the barrel back.

Really:rolleyes: Better look at the difference in case capacityo_O

The Weatherby has a generous freebore , which does reduce velocity . At least in my testing
I met a Texas gunsmith that specialized in building 25/06, 12 twist, 26" Shilen barrels. I thought he had lost his mind. Met 6 guys in camp that had his rifles.

They all shot the following loads, and I checked the velocity with an Ohler 35P:

Win case
Fed 215
100g Sierra Flat base(only!)
3600 fps, less than 10 fps ES
63g of R#25
shot bug holes
neck sized the brass afterwards

Win case
fed 215
117g Sierra flat base(only)
58g of R#25
3300 fps
shot .400
max load for this rifle

I tried to duplicate the loads in a Rem 700 and the loads were way too hot. So, the 12 twist, shilen barrel, 26" length did something very special, and the leade on the Shilen barrel was short.

The above velocities are the exact velocities of a factory mark 5- 257 Weatherby

If you try the above loads in your 25/06, back off 7 grains and work up!!!

No other 100g or 117g bullet would stabilize in this 12 twist barrel. I killed a lot of coyotes, deer, and hogs with this rifle.
