Rear Bag Question

Does having a rear bag to full/stiff have an overall impact on group sizes?

I recently purchased anot almost new Edgewood Minigator with handle, 3/4" ear spacing, low height that is really tight with heavy sand. My old bag is a Protector Deluxe double stitched with 3/8" spacing and is full but not as tight as the Edgewood.

I may be "seeing things" but, my groups are more consistent shooting with the not so tight Protector over the beautiful stiff as a board Edgewood. FWIW, the stock is a Manners T5A with a rear flat of 3/4" that rides in the Edgewood's slot perfectly yet sits between the ears (not all the way down in the slot) on the Protector.

The stock slides/tracks very well on the Edgewood BTW.

Welcome to the frustration.

Shot my Stolle with a mini-gator bag in the IBS Style 1,000 last week at Manatee. Sucked. Huge vertical I never had using a higher Edgewood bag. My best groups have come with a Protector bag that does not look as "sexy" as the others.

Should be practicing right now for this Saturday's 1,000 gong. No luck because of upcoming issues today and tomorrow. All three of my rear bags have the gun shooting differently.

Makes me scream. Pick one and tune for it. Me, I pick one, tune, then use something else. Knuckle head method.

IMHO, yes it can. I have the same bags referenced and use them according the the configuration of the stock (bottom of the buttstock) on a particular BR rifle I'm shooting. So long as the rifle is tracking consistently on which ever the bag, that is my goal and testing has shown me which bag works best on which rifle. And I've even softened and hardened both bags to see which condition works best. As for hard or not as hard, My Minigator is a little softer (in the ears, not the bottom which is hard) than my Protector where I want the sliding (between the ears) to be as consistent as when the stock is riding on the slightlysofter ears. Practice and consistent target results will tell you all you really need to know. Just my thoughts.

I appreciate the info.

The rifle is a 223AI with a brake so it doesn't move much when fired. The next time I shoot at 600 I'll make sure I have enough of ammo to do some back to back testing.
